RE: The "Side arm vs Grizzly" thread got me thinking

.50 AE has more energy and more penetration than a 12 ga. slug. Worst case, if the bear gets you, you might still be able to shoot.

Ideally you pop it with a big rifle before it gets too close....

RE: Whos wife goes in the woods?

OK, took the wife on her first elk hunt.

Got her all setup on a ridge with a nice panorama to keep her interest. Went to the other side of the ridge and started glassing.

Sure enough, not...

RE: You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

Little Sweden has several hundred thousand moose. Big bad Alaska has 100,000.

So you claim Alaska has a damaging population of moose, and that hunters are the problem? Are you with PITA?

1sagittarius:

That's exactly the problem!
On the supply side, the legislature is influenced by all kinds of special interest groups, pork projects, etc. and doesn't want to spend all the money...

RE: You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

Schobs

We're not too far apart.
My figure above for 1994 is 265000 moose in Alaska

Schobs

We are pretty much in agreement again, 100,000 harvested by your numbers, 150,000 harvested...

RE: You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

USFWC

I looked, and the predator kill is a bit high because of two factors:
1. I lumped in the hunter kill and predator kill. So predator kill would be 75% or so.
2. The 'stable' population...

RE: You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

You make an excellent point Schobs. It turns out that neither Sweden nor Alaska are capable of supporting moose populations in 100% of their territories. They both encompass the same latitude range,...

RE: You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

That would be Alaska
Before getting into predation details, can I assume you agree with the harvest numbers?
Then, since Alaska is 4 times the area of Sweden,...

You knew it was true, our game departments Proved Incompetent

One quick example will help clarify the situation.

Alaska brags about it's stable moose population of 140,000 animals for the last 10 years. Alaska's moose harvest is 7,000 animals yearly....

RE: String Pops off Cam - Why?

Ouch! The cams don't appear to flatten, BTW, and they didn't do this for hundreds of shots in the past.

These are 'upgrades' - cables run straight thru the Y to the ends, as opposed to...

RE: String Pops off Cam - Why?

Some good ideas.

Tried swapping one Y harness ends on the axles - no difference - that should have made it lean the other way, no?

Took off one of the cams - they both lean.

Rolled...

RE: String Pops off Cam - Why?

BG and Shot, thanks for the tips.

The cams do appear to be leaning, even when they are not under tension.

They lean more when drawn. It is at rated poundage for the limbs.

String Pops off Cam - Why?

Have been shooting a Hoyt split limb and just had the string pop off the cam. Can anyone please tell me why/how this could happen, and how to prevent it? It's a two cam bow with standard Y cables to...

Varmints - kill and eat required by wanton waste laws?

Noticed that California has wanton waste laws that state you have to recover and eat your kill. Does this apply to varmints? Do you have to eat that ground squirrel?

RE: Help with shotgun for wife

A few thoughts:
Much of perceived recoil is caused by the sound. There are some huge differences in noise reduction depending on the ear protection. Going through the shop and looking at db...
