.300 savage loads
I have a Savage 99 in .300 savage. I have only used factery ammo in it so far Win. 150s group very well as do Fed. 180s. (shot a moose with the 180s last Wed.)
I see some interesting loads in a couple manuals. A 130 grain bullet can be loaded to 2900 or 3000 fps. This sounds like a devistating combo for deer and pronghorn. Anyone loading and using different .300 savage loads?

RE: .300 savage loads
Look in the Nosler Reloading Guide #4. They show some 150 gr loads that approach 2900 fps. The 130 gr. bullets might be a little too fragile on deer if you don't have a good broadside shot. I say this because my dad for a number of years used a 130 gr. Speer out of his 308 to get 3000 fps. One doe he shot on the shoulder ran off and luckily we tracked her and got another shot to put her down. The bullet from his 308 blew up on the shoulder and didn't get penetration. I put her down with a 130 out of a 270. I know this is the same bullet weight but you must look at caliber and sectional density for killing power. One bullet you could use is the Barnes X. They have a 130 and it is suitable for deer. You should be able to approach 2900 out of you 300. My dad switched to this bullet and can still reach 300 fps. Most of his shots on deer with the Barnes are complete pass throughs. He shot a large 9 point buck last year at about 125 yards that was looking straight at him. The bullet entered at the base of the neck and was under the skin at the rear of the left hind quarter. The bullet weighed 129.4 gr on my scale. The buck never moved.

Duffy. You shot a moose without a MAGNUM!!!??? You better go check and make sure it is still dead. For big game like moose I like the 180 grain in 300 Savage. I do think the 130 grain Barnes X would do very well on deer and increase your range a bit. They also make a 140 grain X bullet.
