I bought my lee equipement back in decmeber and have reloaded about 300 rounds and im happyand all. but it says not to use certain brands of small pistol primers but it doesnt say why. i think it reccomends cci and says not to use federal with the hand primer that i have. i would like to know what the structural difference a primer made by cci and 1 made by say federal or winchester.
also why are cci primers cheaper, everywhere i have priced primers the cci brand are cheaper.

Propmahn,
I have heard that the Federal primers will detonate when using the Lee Auto prime tool. They are softer than the CCI primers so it takes less firing pin force to detonate them. I've been told Fed primers are the best to use in semi-auto pistols.
If you want a good hand priming tool get the RCBS. I've been using one for about 2 years now with Federal primers with no problems. It also uses standard shell holders.
As for the cost of primers I also have noticed that CCI are cheaper also.

I've been using Federal primers with a Lee hand primer tool for quite some time and as long as you're careful it works fine. If you squeeze too hard you can see a flat spot on the face of the primer so just guage your squeeze to not go that far. I used safety glasses and face shield at first, now just the safety glasses.
A friend of mine was having a problem with his Lee Auto Prime, come to find out he had the small primer rod in with the large primer tray. This is where the danger begins as he was putting a serious dent in even CCI primers.
Trivia: What does CCI stand for?
What does RCBS stand for?

Propmahn,
All my 'triple deuce' loads have been with Federal primers. And they were free, you can't get cheaper than that.

I am well, and you my diminutive Remington friend? You get an A- LOL
I've been lurking around,
not posting a lot, never have been a man of many words, just like to find and share the facts not shoot so much bull like others (not that there's harm in good fun).
The 'I' in CCI is for incorporated. As you can tell I've been reading Speer's #13, the younger sibling to the #8 you sent (grac~ias amigo).
A few more ?'s
What does CCI and Speer have in common besides the fact of being owned by Blount these days?
Who is currently making Trophy Bonded Bear Claws these days? A story to that one later.
Where can one buy TBBC's as a component for reloading?
