Problem with .223 and one reload.
#1
I have an H&R .223 with the std barrel on it. I put together three loads with W748 because that seems to be a good powder. I wanted to get a final trial to see what load does best. I loaded a 45 gr Sierra SP, with 27.5 gr. I loaded a 50 gr Sierra Blitzking with 27 gr. I loaded a 55 gr. Cabela's SP with 26.5 gr. I can touch bullets with the 45, not quite with the 55, but I have some problems with the Blitzking. It is loaded to a COAL of 2.260" and about every third shot, the case will get stuck in the chamber. There appears to be no signs of high pressure or excessive headspace, as the other two loads function flawlessly, ejecting the shell every time I break the action open. There is no flattening of the primer, no case separation or anything. When I put a fresh round and eject it before firing, there are no marks to indicate that it is touching the rifling. BTW the 45 and 55 are loaded to 2.170 and 2.190 respectively. All cases are Winchester, on their third loading. They were trimmed to 1.750" on the second loading, but did not exceed 1.850" before the third loading. I simply chamfered and deburred the necks. All primers were CCI 400. Does anybody have an Idea as to what might be the problem. The only thing I can even think of is that the bullet may just barely be touching the rifling, and I can't see it.

Check to see if your chamber is rough. It should be polished to a 600 grit finish. If it rough and you are generating just enough pressure, even though you may be well within SAAMI specs, the cases could be grabbing the scraches in the chamber and not letting go.
Color the bullets with a black magic marker and see if you are touching the rifeling. This along with a rough chamber could give you just enough pressure to get a case stuck.

Didn't think about the chamber being a little rough. I am just confused why it is only doing it with the one load. The next step I will take will to be to shorten the OAL by about .020 and see what that does, then I will check to see how rough the chamber is.
