I want to start reloading for my 30-06 but there are to many options!I have been looking at the nosler partition or mabye something like a Ballistic Silver tip? anybody have any thoughts or ideas?

First off, you pick the bullet type/weight for what ever your going to hunt.

If your just starting out, why not start out witha cheaper bullet, and get some practise in, "both" reloading and shooting!

I wished I had gotten this kind of advice when I started out. I would have saved some money. Shoot some much cheaper bullets until you learn the ropes. Some good choices are Sierra Game Kings, Speer Sp BT etc...

If you want instant success, pick a 165gr Sierra gameking. Good all around cheap deer bullet, that generally shoots well in any gun. And behind that, put some IMR4350. Generally good all around powder for 06.

If your elk hunting, or moose, then look at the partition, or accubond.

Good advice all around. I personally like either the old Hornady Interlocks and the Sierra Game Kings in the 180 gr weight. As for powder, IMR4350 of IMR4064 gives good results. My load is 49 gr of IMR4064.
And if either of these bullets shoot well out of your rifle and you are only hunting deer or black bear then they are all you will ever need. Save the Nosler Partitions and other premium bullets for elk or bigger animals. (even though these would work for them too)

For a deer bullet try the 180 grain Speer BTSP and RL 22. RL22 is a slow powder.WhenI started out reloading I used powdersthat filled the case when loaded. Thatmadeitall but impossibe to get into serious pressure problems if you make a mistake. I tried to idiot proof it as much as possible. If you accidentally significantly overcharge a round the bullet will simply not seat. A faster powderwould allow you to add 5 - 10 grains over max and would be more dangerous IMHO.It turns out that RL 22 also gives best velocities for me from 165 to 200 grain bullets.

I have had excellent results with 56.8gr. IMR 4350 pushing out either Nosler ballistic tips and Nosler accubonds. Excellent groups and excellent performance on game. Hornady SST's are great as well, but don't group as well for me.

Heck I deer hunt using sierra 165gr bthp with 56gr of IMR 4350. Super accurate load out of my remington 700 and ruger M77. The sierra and the nosler bt 165gr are the only bullets that I load for the 06.

The bullets you mention are somewhat different so you can't just assume they are the same when reloading?
The other item you don't mention is what type of rifle and twist of that rifle is?
Very important what weight you use to the twist of the barrel and then the powder burn rate comes into effect!
Manufactures and bullet weight and powder used, make up a very clear path that you will need to proceed down, for the best accuracy and tragetory you need for a clean kill on whatever game you are after?

I have never owned a 30-06 that would not shoot either the Sierra 165 grain bullet, or the Nosler 165 grain BT well. I always try the Sierra first(because of price). I only have one 30-06 that shoots the Nosler a bit better. I also prefer RL22 powder. I get the best velocities from RL 22. And as stated above it is idiot proof powder. You could dip the case full and not have a pressure problem. So it is a very safe powder, and it performs very well. Tom.
