Default How safe or strange is this?

I pulled a bunch of 170 FMJ bullets out of 357 rounds.I did this cause I didn't know what loads they were and wanted to use the brass. The strange part is a guy said to just drill the 170's out and weight them down to 158 and reload them correctly. That isn't the smartest sounding thing is it? I planned on redoing the brass and loading 140's with some Unique.Drilling bullets to lighten them is bad idea right?

Pulling bullets from unknown loads is a great idea.
Trying to drill holes in bullets wellthat's a dumb idea, unless you did them in a lathe. IfI was bent on salvaging/using the bullets, instead of drilling holes in them just find a powder/charge for them and load them.

Kinda what I was thinking...if I need 158's,I go buy them.To reuse the 170's I just dump 7 grains or less of unique and call it a day! My Dad said he remembers way back when they would just cut the end off Mil. ball ammo to make hunting ammo...and it would sometimes shoot the core out and leave a copper jacket stuck in chamber...he didn't practice that,he bought soft pionts and loaded his own.I need some heavy bullets to work up hunting load but FMJ doesn't have much use in 357 for me,gonna buy some 180 XTP's!

Well, if the bullets mike no larger than .358", you COULD use them for a target load. I used to shoot 173-grain bullets in my .357. They were lead but I loaded them with 13.5 grains of 2400, and they shot nicely. This was my "standard" .357 load for years.

It sounds both strange as well as unsafe.
