Getting geared up for the new rifle in the arsenal and looking for some info on your favorite load combo's for the Whelen. I like the looks of the Barnes and the Trophy bonded bear claw bullets in 200 to 250 gr weights. Lets see what others think and what your favorites are.

I got a whelen to take to alaska with me as a general purpose big game rifle. I have found a few bullets that shot very well for me. I have two loads worked up right now that will shoot with the same zero that will work for all of my big game hunting. I have the Hornady 250gr RN at 2450fps using varget powder dead on at 100 yards shooting nice 1" groups, and the Sierra 225gr SBT at 2675fps with H322 shooting 1"-1 1/4" groups exactly 3" high at 100 yards. I will stick to these two loads because I won't ever need to change zero on my rifle. The 250gr loads for close range brush work for moose, bear, and the 225gr SBT for longer work for carabou, deer out to 300-350 yards. I just happened upon these two loads and liked them enough to keep them. I also tried the 225gr Nosler BT but had a freind shoot a michigan whitetail in the chest with one and only get 5" of penetration. Killed the deer but I couldn't believe the lack of penetration. I know some other guys like them in the whelen but I'll stick with the two I got shooting good.
