I was all set to order a custom 6.5 X 284 barrel for my Encore. Now I am considering the 6 X 284 as well(Roskoe started me on the 6 X 284). Rifle will be used mostly for ground hogs out to 500 yards. Possibly some deer hunting. Recoil is not a factor(I also shoot some 300's for ground hogs). Any experiences? Any information I might need? Thanks, Tom.

Let me know if you do it, I really want to build one up after winter. It seems like the best 6mm there is. The onlyother one I could find was a .243 Catbird, its a .270 Win necked down to 6mm. Its on Jarrett Rifles website. you might want to check it out too.

Not too many years back, a young woman (Michelle M Gallagher) won the 1,000-yard Wimbledon Cup match at Camp Perry with a fast-twist 6mmX284 firing long, heavy bullets......

I've already weighed in on this one in a previous thread; but comparing the two calibers . . . . . the 6.5-284 is very similar in performance to a .270 Winchester. It has outstanding long range accuracy and shoots bullets with very good ballistic coefficient.
The 6MM-284, as a varmint caliber, is like a great big turbo charged .22-250. There is really nothing else in this performance class. Check out the external ballistics for a 70 grain Nosler ballisic tip at 4,000 fps. It's hard to believe how flat this gun shoots . . . .

Have you seen this website. This guy won a 1000 yd match using a straight .243. Using 115 gr bullets.

The actual deminsions of a bullet are a moot point. Get a bullet design with a high enough B.C. and S.D and put it in a case that can push it fast enough. Then, find a barrel that will shoot that bullet well. Heck, I'd like to be a rich old fart that could take a .10 caliber bullet in the 60-100grain and redefine what people think could be done. Varmints and paper everywhere would shudder at a 600yard 3" point blank range Any idea what type of money it would take to head up a project like that? IT WOULD BE UNREAL!!! You'd have to start from the ground up. No one I know of makes bullets in .10"; barrels in .10"; dies in .10"...and then I suspect you'd have to design a completely new case with a taper at the base and not just the shoulder. That would probably necessitate a new magazine design...or a new gun based on a rotary magazine. Then...I doubt I wouldn't get the itch to develop some new powder just for it. (realistically someone could start with the .17 remington and go from there.) BUUUTTT I'm just rambleing and trying to make peice at the same time. Sorry for high jacking the thread.
