The max case length is 1.760 but most cases are shorter, what do you trim yours to. Do you think 1.740 is to short.

I trim mine to 1.750" also. I think the Speer manual lists all recommended trim to lengths at .010" less than max. That being said, I don't think 1.740 would be too short, unless you are shooting bullets larger than about 50 grains or so. That extra lenghtmight, MIGHT just help with keeping the bullet stable and aligned correctly? One thing, you probably wouldn't have to worry about trimming for a few loads unless the brass stretches quite a bit in your chamber.

I pounded out some Lake City ammo I have and the unfired brass is 1.775 for the most part, I know 5.56 ammo is different than 223 because it's a little longer, anybody know the case specs for 5.56? Reason I ask is RL15 max load will not fit in 223 at 1.76, spills out, so I wonder if that max load of RL15 is for 5.56.

I've found that the Lee system seems to work best for me .I trim all my rifle cases with the Lee case trimmer ,it will trim them all to the same length with no adjustments needed. They are preset at the factory. Then I resize my bottle neck cases in a Lee collet size die ,since their's no expander pulled back thru the neck their's very little stretching. Sizing tends to stretch cases more than fireing them does. This collet die will not work for auto loaders.

Absolutely not. 1.740 is fine...I'm a bit unusual in that I'll trim mine to 1.730 so that I never have to trim the case again for the life of the case. I hate brass trimming so only do it once.

There will be no problem with brass at 1.740. Further it will not effect accuracy in the least.
