How does federal get their smoking loads? Does anyone have a load that is simular to the Federal HE loads that is safe to use? Do they use a special powder or what? Everything I have found so far isn't close.

Hornady offers the light magnum and heavy magnum loads. Both companies use special powders and special loading methods to achieve the extra velocity. However,I have chronographed several of the hornady and federal loads and not one achieved the advertised velocity.

Not only don't they make the advertised speed, but accuracy generally leaves something to be desired. I guess if you believe they will kill better, maybe it is a self fullfilling prophecy.

I can't understand why you would need a 'light magnum' loading in the 270. It seem to do just fine just the way it is. But to answer your question DRH, it has to be in the propellant.
