It doesn't matter where the cow came from! what matters is how and when this cow got sick. Could it have gotten sick in the US? or was it infected in Can, before being shipped to the US? Unfortunatly no one knows these answers. a lot of work will have to be done to root out the problems if they ever do find the cause. In the mean time its best not to throw rocks, as they could bounce back and hit you in the head.

Big Guy; you're right. They need to put a lid on all cattle movement to prevent spread and eliminate the disease. It's just interesting how Canada gets the finger pointed at us when the US isn't 100% certain that it was a Canadian cow or where it picked up the disease. The Canadian Mad cow last spring had a good possibility of being shipped from the US but we didn't point fingers.

[:@]Heys guys, couldn't help but notice most of you are from out east. Granted most of you, and the rest of the country would be outraged if Canada does not fire back at the U.S, yet some people want to roll over and wait for whatever to happen. They just don't care. I live in southern Alberta, and the farmers and ranchers aren't the only ones hit hard. My town is totally agricultural based, and even though I work in the retail end of things, (Hunting gear) everybody got nailed. The farmers didn't make money, so their not spending money. When we heard that the Canadian border, for the most part will remain open to U.S beef, we were outraged. This is simply another case of western Canada being overlooked by the Liberal dictatorship. Landowners out east donated feed and other supplies to local area farmers. For that, I will say thank you. It was much appreciated. But at the same time, the Govt. in their good will decided to give these guys next to nothing for compensation, while still maintaining the gun registry is a worthy and noble cause. Please remember this when the next election rolls around.

Hey Pharaoh2 . I do live in the east. I live in Bruce county , beef capital of Ontario. The beef farmers around here are hurting so are the impliment dealers etc, etc. The farm community is the bread and butter of this area. When they hurt we all hurt. Just thought you'd like to know we are all in the same boat, so we had better start rowing together if we want to get out of this mess.

pharaoh2; I don't remember saying that our government should sit back and do nothing. I agrre that we need to take all steps necessary to protect the Canadian beef industry.

My neighbour in Bruce county sent 10 cattle to market last September. He got $2000 total and it cost $400 to ship the cattle. This guy keeps about 250 head, so you can work out the math how well he did this year.

So we have two threads here: One is the US should take responsibility for their mess, the other is it's all the Liberal government's fault. If you're from Alberta it's always someone else's fault. Sure hope this cow turns out not to be Alberta Origin, because farmers, etc... all over Alberta and Canada are just as affected. But if the industry doesn't own the problem it won't go away. Farmers are far too passive about their low standards (ask the people of Walkerton). It's all "the family farm" meanwhile they are a major industry that polutes, and is hardly touched for it. Every farmer is touched by this stuff, and should be driving the high standards, but that isn't what happened here. The industry was realy late doing anything about it their feed practices. Nobody owes Alberta a living, and there is no right to participate in the US market unless they are selling a safe product. Canadian industry is the most export dependant of the G7, moreso even than Japan. That's always a risky situation.
