Default Banff in June

I don't uselly post over here, but I have a chance to go to Banff this summer and was wondering what to expect. I will have the kids in tow so can't do anything exotic. But for 7 days or so I wouldn't mind camping, fishing, or just plain seeing that part of the country.

Any thoughts from you Canadian's as to what to expect or what to do that time of year?

Also if anybody is in the area maybe we could get together. I've done several get togethers with other people from the board and we've all had good time's

Thanks a lot

Baniff in June would be great. It is spectacular country you wont regret going. Paul peyto from Lake Lousie does back country horse trips which could be interesting for your family. Everything is outfitted and all you have to do is sit on a horse.

Banff is great all year round. You can fly fish in the Bow river, you can play golf amoung the herds of elk, you can shop hike and whitewater raft.

I have been there mostly on business, and we stayed at the world famous Banff Springs hotel that I highly recomend, though it is damn expensive, it is really a major part of the Banff experience. I had passed through a number of times, and wondered what all the fuss was about as far as the town is concerned, though the location is tremendous. The hotel will change your point of view.

Banff is near Lake Louis, and Jasper (a bit of a drive). Both have word famous hotels of their own. If you are planing on staying in hotels I would see if you could stay at each one.

Like a lot of mountain parks, for instance, Glacier, this is a great place to view "wild" animals. You will see elk, deer, goat, and often large bears.

Don't expect these places to be wilderness preserves, they are tourist traps, with lots of inbound tours from places like Japan. The Banff Springs hotel has/had a tartan shop that opens only to receive Japanese tours.

I would not make heavy financial comitments relative to the the first week of June, vs the last. Banff is about 4500 ft, and you can get dodgy weather in the spring. Average temps daytime should be around 68, at night more like 45.

Why don't you go for the Calgary Stampede? I was there in July. Make sure that you take very warm (-10 C preferred) sleeping bags as it gets cold at night in the mountains.

If you're lucky you'll see some of the best Northern Lights as they dance across the tops of the mountains.

Hey Thanks for the info guys

I'm doing a trip there because my wife's company is sending her there for some convention .
I'll have to pop for the airfare and spending money for me and the kids, but lodging and meals will be on them.

I've called the travel agent to hunt for airfare. Don't have any info yet.

I would like to fish and hike some. Don't think the kids would deal with the horses very well as they are still fairly young but they love to hike and fish.

I want to see things I don't get to see around here.

Thanks again for the info and if you have any more, please feel free to share.
