Need scope comparison advice
I just picked up a pre 64 Winchester model 70 30.06 for deer hunting. It has an old 4X fixed scope with a Pachmeyer swing away mount. I want to put a 3X9X40 scope with a fixed mount on it. Typical shot will probably be between 100-150yds out of a blind. I'm thinking of the following scopes and was looking for any input from people who have experience with these. Thanks.
Leupold VX-II
Nikon Pro Staff
Nikon Buckmasters
Leupold VX-II
Nikon Pro Staff
Nikon Buckmasters

RE: Need scope comparison advice
I have experience with a Leupold Vari-X II and 2 Nikon Monarchs (which is supposed to be above the Buckmasters and Pro Staff). One of the Monarchs was great, the other was not. Just not clear and bright as the other. Why I have no clue. The Leupold Vari-X II, while maybe a decent value was not up to what I expect out of a scope. Low light performance really suffered. If you can go $250-$300, look at the Bushnell Elite 4200. If you can go $450-$500, look at the Zeiss Conquest.

cheapest scope I'd own would be a nikon monarch....spend the money.
I wont go below a leupold vx-iii, and am starting to think nikon monarchs are nicer than leupold vx-iii.
You'll never regret spending more for quality.

For less 300 bucks you can pick up the following on ebay:
Niikon Team Primos 3X9X40 with BDC reticls - this is the "old" Nikon Monarch - better than Prostaff or Buckmaster
Burris Fullfield II 3X9X40 - I have one of these, bright, clear, reliable
Bushnell Elite 3200, any power range. I have the 4X12 with Ballistic plex reticle on my coyote rifle (.243) and love it. Clear, rugged, rainguard feature really works.
Bushnell Elite 4200 3X9X40. Fantastic riflescope. I see one now on ebay, buy it now price of $249.00. Many people consider this the best scope you can get under $400.00 (retail). Compares favorably with the Zeiss Conquest.
