For lower end I would go with Nikon but if you're over $500, go with the VX-III.

I have a Nikon 3-9x40 monarch and its a very bright clear scope for the $220 I paid for it. optcially I think its a good match for my VXIII 2.5-8x36. that cost $150 more

There is lots more to consider in a scope than just brightness and clarity. there are matters of size, weight eye relief and side to side and up and down eye box. There is also warranty.. not just what the company writes on paper but how the company really does take care of warranty issues.

I think if I rated most Leupold scopes solely on cost VS resolution, leupold wouldn't be much of a value. Depending on your use..taking in consideration those other factors. Leupold can be a very good deal.

Many of those factors are notvery apparent in a sporting goods store.. But try to quickly shoulder a rifle with a scope with 3" of eye relief and aquire a difficult target like a flying bird.. then try it with a scope with 4" of eye relief and a generous eyebox... big difference.

That said I am not so impressed with the VXI I evalutated...If I could I do a Monarch or if thats to much a Burris FFII.

You can't beat the Nikon Monarch for the money. I have been very pleased with the ones I own.

Nother vote for Nikon. I have a 2x7x32 Pro Staff on my 1187 slug gun. Crisp and clear optics. Good price too.

I got a nikon buckmasters in realtree camo for about 200 bux+ bore sighted for 100 yard zero. its a great no hassles scope. it is a little tuff to turn the magnafication knob though, I allways keep mine on 3x power any ways. If a longer distance shot presents its self I have time to adjust the scope for the shot, if not it was not a shot worthy of takeing. any ways they are great, half the price of leapold and twice as good.

I have Nikon Prostaff and I like it

When I was shopping for a new scope I compared the Nikon Monarch to the VXII and chose the Nikon. I have since added another Nikon Monarch to the family. Great scopes.

Neither, I think both are horrible scopes. Go up to a VXII or a monarch. Better yet, go with a VXIII or a conquest.
