Default Leupold M8 4x ?

I have a Mossberg ATR100 in 270 that currently has a Tasco 4x scope on it,The Tasco was a freebee that a friend had on his shotgun.Im looking to upgrade to a better scope in the 100.00 range.I have noticed that I have seen a few used Leupolds M8 4x going on auction site in this price range.I need to know if this would be a good way to go for a decent scope in my price range. Most of my shots will be in the woods at under 100yds,at this piont in my life that is about the most I can spend on a scope. This rifle is the only center fire rifle that I have and use for deer hunting here in NY and hopefully PA.

The M8 4 power is a great scope. it is one of the classic fixed power big game scopes. Small, Light weight and ultra reliable. A fixed power has less lenses and less moving parts. You will never miss a shot by fiddling with the zoom knob. I prefer fixed power scopes. They used to be much cheaper than variables. They still shouild be. They are cheaper to build. But volume is the key to brining prices down. And the fixed powers don't sell like they used to.
Noted gunwriter and optics guru Craig Boddington also prefers fixed powers in 4 and 6x. He claims (and I agree) that for shots of 250 and less, the 4X isgreat, and for shots of 250 to 400, the 6X is perfect.
I have also had some problems with variables scopes shifting point of impact when you crank up or down the power. This is not unknown even in high end scopes. They are much better now but I still keep my variable scopes at the same power setting that I zeros them at (4 and 6X)
My next Purchase will be a 6X (sightron S3, or maybe Zeiss, Kahles, or Swarovski Habicht) in6X for my Mauser in 300 win mag.
My Leupold M8 4x sits upon my Marlin 882 .22 mag.
Plus, every one uses a Leupold or Zeiss conquest 3-9x40. I like using something different. And I like to keep it simple. I have enough to worry about without diddling with the power knob.
I bought mine used. It had a problem and I sent it to leupold, telling them that I was not the original owner. They fixed it anyway free.
Oh and the eye relief is good too.
Well I do ramble about optics!!

Thank you okcmco for your input,it was along the same lines that I was thinking about with a fixed 4x scope.I have owend a few Leupold veriables in the past and have been very happy with them. This last year life has delt me a few devastating[?spelling]blows and I had ended up with just a 870 express left for a gun.If it had not been for a close friend and hunting partner I would have never ended up with the Mossberg ATR,he won the gun in a raffle and sold it to me for the 100.00 he had in the ticket.I did find a MX8 4x today that is new in the box for 2000.00 dollars,a littile more then I wanted to spend but the lady who had it also gave me a Burris Fullfeild 4x in the deal.I know nothing about the Burris line of scopes but still think I did ok on the deal.I like what you said about keeping things simple, that is the only way I keep going every day. Thanks againe

Good luck with it. BTW the Burris Fullfield is a great scope too.
