Default with safety in mind.......

nelsonville was in full glory again this year. some very challenging ranges, some wonderful people, and a lot of hard work by all who put on the shoot....

again, we got pulled from the ranges for bad weather, not a problem. we shoot outdoors and that is to be expected. now for the wrench....we shot on L M N O ranges. we were told by the hocking college police that if we parked at our ranges, we had to park in the gravel area, enough for about 20 vehicles, or take the shuttle. we did as directed. we parked down the road in another parking lot, and walked to the check in where we then took the shuttle to our ranges. when the bad weather hit, we were told to exit the ranges and take the shuttle back to the check in tent. when we exited the range i noticed power lines directly overhead of the pickup point. had there been really bad weather, that probably wasnt the best place to be. why are we not allowed to have our vehicles along the road as we were in years past. i know last year there was some issues with road construction on highway 33, but this year was all clear.

had really bad weather hit, we at least would have an opportunity to take cover if our vehicles were near our ranges. the lone shuttle could not accomodate all the shooters, and there was no room to get inside at the check in tent. we were told everything from liablitly issues to native grasses being driven on.

i dont mind walking to ranges, nor do i mind getting wet. had there been more lightning or hail, there would have been real problems for a lot of folks. we were told listen for sirens and train whistles, we heard both several times throughout the weekend, when the skies were clear we laughed, when the skies were bad we wondered if that was the que to exit the ranges.....how about a better means of alerting shooters, and a better place to park to allow the shooters to at a minimum drive to safety, or at least get into a vehicle to get out of bad weather. we never know if the siren is the police chasing a bad guy, or an ambulance going on a run....again all things ended up okay, and i am not complaining, just looking at alternatives.
