RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
legend 88,
I'm not sure what you are refering to but I assure I ment no offense ti u.a.l. As I see it his thread was an honest attempt to express his feelings about his own personal shooting requirements and pleasures. His opinion like mine is 100% ligitamate and his right to express it can not be denied. |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
i view this entire ibo thing as a grass roots deal. fastfletch is right in his statement new shooters have no idea what the ibo is, or what it is about. getting them involved in the clubs is the beginning. the invitation to the ibo world shoot is the pinnacle, likened by some to an invite to the olympics. once these new shooters are educated to the process to get to the big dance, then the problem starts. with the hunter class being one of the larger classes, by fastfletches own admission, it would be even harder for the average bowhunter to get the invitation, with the toploaded talent in that class.
another problem, the ibo has initiated the rule that you have to be an ibo member to participate in qualifiers. in the past, we only passed along the addional 5 dollar fee the ibo directed us to. with the average cost of a qualifier being 20 dollars, the additional 25 dollars paid by a person who has no interest in the ibo has definately showed up on the national level. part of the money gained by the qualifiers goes into the world purse. by the numbers present at the ibo this year, i would say people did not participate in many qualifiers. the ones who are truly interested paid, and shot. the problem is the new guy who has a desire to go, but is not yet an accomplished shooter, has to shoot the top scores to be able to go. multiple qualifiers doesnt help. i qualified multiple times this year, and in all likelyhood bumped someone who really wanted to go. once you qualify, you should be able to participate in local qualifiers, but scores not count toward the overall qualifier, enabling more folks to get in if they have not qualified. make it mandatory to be a member for the national level shoots, but not the local qualifier. this is the grass roots foundation we need. it starts from the bottom up, at the club and local level. the hunter class has evolved into a huge class we all agree. the ones who do not see it as a problem may not have a problem locally, and only see the sucess on the national level. locally, the ibo affiliated clubs, or clubs who use the ibo rules are getting beat to death with targets, and folks who have ability way beyond the hunter class. initiate a semipro and pro pins class, reduce the max yardage in the mbr to 40 yards, have a seniors class for hunter and mbr. the guy who says he is compfortable with the 35 yard max, and only attends to practice and have a good time, will always be what drives ahead of all other things in the ibo. no one is going to get rich shooting a bow. after every national shoot i attend, even if i win money, i still have to go to work on monday. the idea that we can move up without being forced to is something the ibo is very fair about. i agree that folks should not be forced to move up, but merely think that an avenue for progression be available. |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
i posted some incorrect information above, you do not have to be an ibo member to shoot qualifiers, just the state championships, and national events.....

RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
Keith,
The trophy class had room for more shooter in all classes as I understand it and the cost to qualify is nothing. The entry fee is only 25 dollars which is a considerable difference. Every one is shooting at the center of the 10 ring so at club level you can eliminate the 11 ring score or use the ASA 12 ring to conserve replacements. In our area we do not use the 11 ring as part of the scores. |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
:D:D:D fasstfletch, I agreee with you on the no 11 ring thing; makes people try too hard and the math is a bummer also. Actually i favor a bigger 10 ring, as I see it on most targets the kill area is larger than the 10 ring. By the way how much does your club charge for shooting the course?? It seems to me if clubs are having trouble with the targets getting shot up and they are complaing about the cost, why not raise the fee for shooting?? Don't they do that in the real world?? If some clubs don't charge enough for a shoot and others charge more to cover costs, which club is smarter??

RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
pselee,
OUr league charges $8.00 for 30 targest. One dollar goes to the leaue for the banquet and we only give small name plates each week to the class winners. At the end of the year we have a banquet that is free to all shooters who attended a minimum of 3 shoots at each club. The remainder of the prise money goes in to door prises that are drawn from a hat. Each year we give about $1800 to $2000 in door prises that are purchased from shops that support the league. |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
:D:D:D I like the way you do business!!! You need to educate other clubs how to do things! I think that is the real problem most clubs go under or really just barely keep operating is because they do not know how to manage their assests and motivate people to become members and stay so. Good work !!

RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
Just check our clubs results, www.eastkyarchery.org
We had 96 different shooters in the HC this year, the competition was great. Some club members brought friends out for their first attempt at 3-D and it was great to see how they enjoyed it. We use the 11 ring because it is IBO rules, the more you vary from those rules the more likely someone will be upset when they get to a State, national IBO event. We need the senior classes, my old shoulder is really having a tuff time this season and I have missed several shoots because of that. I can't shoot the heavy poundage anylonger and I still like to feel competitive but the young guys are kicking my but most of the time. |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
This thread has gone on now for 16 pages now and I still don't think that we have an agreement on what needs to be done for the hunter class or if indeed there is a problem. Keith and many others has some good points and I am sure that some of the shooters that are shooting in the hunter class at the big IBO shoots are former MBR and MBO shooters that have moved down to hunter class. There is no rule against this and as long as there equipment is legal then that is their choice. As far as clubs having there targets shot up then they need to regroup and charge accordingly to replace them as needed. We are all adults here and we all can choose the class that we want to compete in. I shot the IBO
southern triple crown this year and the world shoots at Snowshoe for the first time ever. I did not win any of them but learned a lot along the way. I have never been so nervous as I was on my first three targets at world. It was all I could do to pull my bow back and try to hit the targets. You will never get some people to join the IBO or get them out to shoot 3D tournaments no matter what classes they have orwhat they can win. All we can do is invite them out and hope that they will show up. I agree with the idea of givng them a reduced entry fee for their first time shooting in an IBO shoot but beyond that they have to shoot the same 40 targets that I do and have the same opurtunities to win as everyone else does. I have kept up with this thread from day one and I would love to see some good changes come from it. I do not see though how we are going to achieve it at the way we are going about it. We can't seem to agree on what the hunter class needs or if we need to move some of them up to MBO or where. It would not be fair to make them move up as long as they want to shoot under the hunter class setup. Even though I did not win this year, I had a lot of fun and met some really terrific people along the way. I finished in the top half of the hunter class at every shoot I went to and that was a good goal for me to achieve. I will be back for 2005 and hope that I can make some of the northern triple crown shoots as well as the southern triple crown. Good luck this hunting season and I look forward to seeing many of you in Wetumpka, Alabama next year for the first leg of the southern triple crown! |
RE: HUNTER CLASS IDEAS
Well this has been an education for many people so far and I think that we can all learn something from the many threads. Here are some facts to consider. As much as we would like to think that this is a large issue these are the facts to consider. During these many threads there has been many suggestions and may facts that we must consider.
There have been 15+ pages of post as of this time and there has been 152 post. One thing you may not realize was that there was only 37 Individuals that made these threads. Considering that there were over 4000 hits on this subject and only 37 people choose to comment should tell us something. At the World this year the hunter class had a total of 523 shooters in the trophy and money round. The number 37 was about 7% of number of shooters in the hunter class at the world. The people shooting in the hunter class at a national level seem to be pretty happy or at least they are the silent majority. Everyone posting a thread on this subject had all the best intentions as far as they were concerned and that is a good thing. Maybe the 4000 who say nothing need to join this exercise and see if they can contribute to the organization. At the club level each area may have things that work and don't work. What ever draws new shooters and club members should be the key. If the clubs have problems with membership numbers that would be the first thing to study. Maybe setting up a competitive 3D league with rewards at the end of the year, such as our league, will give people more of a club spirit and competitiviness to build on. The only bad suggestions are the ones that you never hear or try. Good luck and communications is the key here on the net and many people working together may solve things that seem unsolveable. |
