Is there such a rule in the IBO rules ?If so where can this be found?
I pesonaly don't use this method ,but have herd of people that do .

The rules state that you cannot use any part of your equipment or person as a means to establish the range.(paraphrase)
I believe the pins are part of your equipment. I have heard these rumors from time to time. If you see a sight with pins below the ones used for sighting that look like they might be set up for this purpose, (inverse gaps) you might ask what that is for or refer the set up to an official.

Thank you for clearing this up .i personally am making a note of it ,and have heard of this goin on .

I was accused of this several years ago by an open class shooter. I was using a timberline crosshair sight with 4 crosshairs, 20, 30, 40, and 50. I have since went to scope myself and the accuser is out of 3-d. Maybe the fact that I was winning and he was not had something to do with his questioning my scores ? It seems to me that this would be very hard to do with the different sizes of the targets ? Why not limit the number of pins ? I can't see why anyone needs more than 4 although I know alot of sights come with 5. Anymore than this and I say eliminate them from the sight.

The rule states that if pins or crosshair sights are used there shall be no more than 4 pins allowed

The 4 pin rule is for Hunter Class only.

I hate to even say how to do this.
Set a deer target at 40 set a pin on his back ,and one on its belly.there you go ,any deer target set at below or longer than 40you can tell.and a good majority of targets that are deer like will fit the picture.
I don't do this .I do have 5 pins and believe this would be a good amount to stop at in the MBR class. The shooter judging yardage in this fasion would have as many as six or seven pins i would imagine.I personally have to judge within a yard or 2 .My pro 40 with 27" draw is shooting 265 @ 60#.

This subject came up at the 3D range i shoot at by another shooter who thought he had seen this happening .And i just wanted to clearify the rule on it.

I agree that you could tell if it was over or under whatever distance your pin gap covered but the BIG QUESTION is how much over or under ? You can do the same with your binos, if they are focused on say a 35 yard shot and you have to refocus them for the next shot you know if it is closer or farther, but how much ? I am not doubting that some of this goes on but I think you could get so wrapped up in zeroing in on yardage that you may lose concentration on the shot itself.

Also it would only tell you on THAT target, there are at least 3 different size deer mcKenzies, then toss in all the bears, lion, pigs etc. Factor in angles, up/down and quartering and you will see that you should just spend the time practicing judging than memorizing all this. However, this "skill" came from the unmarked target games where the target never changes size/shape.

I think most of these "rumors" and accusations come from people who just can't believe someone is better than they are, heck if I can't do it, they must be cheating! [:'(]
