Default Maine Deer Conditions

Has anyone heard anything on deer hunting for this coming fall? I read in a previous post about a mass beachnut crop this year, what about acorns? Anyone got an pre-season ideas of whats gonna be hot or what is hot now? Any predictions?

Saw a bunch of deer in central-western ME this summer, I think it's gonna be a good year for deer sign, we just need about 2 weeks of rain (the well at our hunting camp is bone dry for the second year in a row!, that means hauling in water 5 miles up the 4wd trail to camp for 7 guys, it sucks).

So far its real dry as you can imagine, but they did get some of this rain over the last few days. I'm hearing good things about the beech crop from some locals over on HA site. They are seeing a lot of deer and one guy who uses a game cam has been showing many very large bucks. My father, a resident, heard a radio talk show where the guy said the state would be very disappointed if the kill did not reach 35,000 this year. Things are looking good...now if the weather will cooperate we should be in business.

Where do you hunt? We're in the Dexter/Corinna area, but also hunt up towards Atkinson occasionally.

We hunt grouse in October just north of Rumford in Roxbury/Byron. But come November we hunt at our hunting camp on top of a mountain in Livermore/Hartford/Canton area (30 mins north of Lewiston). We have taken more deer and been more successful than all other hunters in our area.

2001 - 7 pt, 180 lbs. and a yearling doe; 2000 - 7 pt, 162 lbs; 1999 - high tined 8 pt, 205 lbs; 1998 - doe & 6 pt; 1997 - 2 spikes (110 & 116 lbs) and a 13 pointer, 218 lbs; and 5 other bucks since 1982 that have cleared 200 lbs. with other deer mixed in that werent' too notable (120-180 lb range)...

We were up to camp this weekend getting some things done before November comes. Didn't notice many acorns at all, almost none. 200 acres around us is basically oak and beech stands. Surprised to not see acorns, but it won't be the first time.

Outside of beechnuts, I wonder what they will focus their diet on. The deer shot over the past few years have consistently had ground up hemlock and greens in their stomachs, even when there was a good acorn crop. Makes you wonder sometimes.

He's over on Huntamerica and goes by the name of woodseye. Go into the deer hunting forum and you'll see his posts. He's got 100's of pictures...some very nice bucks, including a sweeeeeet non-typical. All central Maine deer, many from my stomping grounds. Your not a member over there on HA??? I'm over there 80% of the time.
