Well? How'd everyone do? I fed Mosquitos.

My father and I got to the woods about 4:25am. There were already 2 trucks there and 4 stands taken. They werent the stands I wanted to sit in so it worked out ok. About 10 mins after shooting time a nice bodied deer came by the stand. It was still pretty dark. I couldnt tell whether the deer had horns or not. I dont think so though. Think it was a big doe. I could barely see they pins and the deer was about 35yds out. My comfortable range is 25yds, 30 tops. Had to let it walk. Only thing else I saw was a sickly looking raccoon came by around 8am. My father had a fawn hang around his stand for about a half hour. Met a guy on the way out who said he saw a small buck move through the woods into the standing corn around 7am. The b*stards are in that corn I know it. Once its cut, its going to get real interesting.

I'll be out again next saturday, hopefully healed from my skeeter bites and ready for round 2... <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

We're still 12 days and counting . . . At least you're out there having fun. Since the drought killed the corn, the corn should be coming down earlier than usual. They've been cutting it around here for weeks. Good luck!

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

I was in my stand at 5:45. I chose the stand location next to the swamp. Nothing happening till 730 when I heard a twig snap to my right. I slowly looked over and it was a medium size Doe. She was heading straight for me. She was wheezing with every breath. The sound is hard to describe. Sort of a half grunt/wheeze. She walked to within 10 yards, broad side, but i let her pass. She headed for the swamp. I figured the season is young, and I was hoping for a buck come by, but that was it for that stand. I pulled up stakes around 10am and headed for the truck.
Got to my truck and 6ptsika (Adam) was there waiting to help me drag out the big one :-) . He did better from his stand. he can tell you the whole story when he gets to a computer. I know he will be in this area till tues night.
I went back to another location till about 3 pm. I couldnt hold my eyes open. I kept falling asleep and could feel myself falling forward and each time it would startle me. So I thought the season is early, why risk getting hurt. So I packed up and headed home for a nice cup of coffee and a long nap. Hope others had good luck.

Still misting when I got up Monday morning so I decided to do a little still hunting on our farm that burned last week. Went way to the back where the woods were unscathed. Noticed a bunch of acorns were blown off during the rain so I made my way to a big white oak patch. I was working my way down a ditch bank, stopping to glass every once in a while, when I saw a deer feeding along a fire break about 40 yards out. I ducked down and closed the distance by half. Got set up behind some brush and waited 'em out. Turned out to be a doe, a fawn, a forkie and a tall racked 7 point. Eventually, the bucks headed out to the ditch I was on and the doe and fawn fed towards me along the paralleling fire break. Just as the forkie cleared the edge, the doe was about 3 yard over. She freaked when she saw me a snorted off. The bucks came running over and stood about 5 yards out looking at her. I had about a 3 inch gap between to trees to shoot through to get to the bigger buck's chest. Let's just say I have to go back and get my broad head out ot the tree!!!

Saw alot of deer in the afternoon. All does and fawns. Hunted a secluded bean field near Milton. Felt good to be back at it!!!! Probably head out again Sat.

Took my son out yesterday evening after I got home from work. I decided to do a little ground hunting. We got out and set up 40 yds from a bean field, next to a fallin down tree. I had my son turned around so he could watch behind us. After about 1 hour my legs started going numb from having them crossed so as I started to get up un my knees, out pops this big doe from behind the fallen tree and she is lookin right at me. I had the bow in front of my face so I whispered to my son &quot; Big doe in front of me, dont move&quot;. Well she did all she could to get me to move but I didnt. As she turned to feed on acorns I began to draw but Im not sure if she saw me or what but she spooked about the time a squirrel started barking and she bolted. We waited another hour and there was not enough light to continue hunting the woods so we decided to slip down the hill behind us to check the bean field. well we didnt get ten steps when all hell broke loose to our right. Two deer broke out of some thick stuff. One ran in front of us about 40 yds out, it was BIG. Had to be a buck but not for sure cause there wasnt much light. The other one took off away from us in another direction, never saw him but heard three or four jumps and the woods fell silent. It was cool to see with my son, but now its time to get back in the stand where I have a better chance, which means he will have to sit home.
After spooking those deer, the second two I know couldnt have seen us but I know heard us. But I guess its still a good idea to let things cool off for a couple days before heading out to that same location. Question: After a couple days do you feel the bucks will continue using that location and should i hang my stand close to it? I need some pointers on how to &quot;pattern&quot; bucks right now. Thanks....

Allen, The bucks generally use the same areas with good regularity this time of year. May not be the exact trails or even sides of a field, but it should be the same food source day in and day out for a while. Take note of the conditions (wind, weather, temps, etc.) yesterday and the next time they are repeated go back. Maybe move back from the edge farther. I'd wait a few days. If possible, I skip 5 days to a week anyway. Keeps the area fresh. If you have a climber, I'd hunt out of it. You'll disturb the area fairely severly if you hang one now and want to hunt it any time soon.

Good luck!!

Well, I hadn't hunted the area I was in for a couple of years, so I drove over Sunday, and put a couple glow tacks on the tree I liked, it's a good natural funnel in a small ravine. Got out of there quick and took advantage of the downpour to hang a couple stands undetected in MD.
I was settled in and waiting by 5:00, and right at dawn one worked by in the thick stuff, and two little forms gosted by under the tree, had to be a couple fawns and their mom. About 7:00, a small buck worked his way towards me, and stopped to paw out a little spot about 10yds from my tree. As I waited for a good angle, he looked back, so I held off to see what else was with him. Another buck about the same size followed him out, and they started gobbling acorns 10yds from me. After a minute or two, they squared off and started sparring, but they were still in velvet so they wouldn't touch antlers, but poked each other's hind quarters, essentially chasing each other's tails in a circle. By this time, I had the bow back, but every time they stopped, they were at bad angles. Finally they stopped broadside, and I double lunged the first one, who went about 40yds and piled up. My first buck in velvet. 110lb 3pt, but a tasty way to start the season.
Came one short of my limit on doves in the evening, and was invited to hunt a farm Tuesday morning by my buddy. Could have filled my quality buck tag on a big 6pt with no brow tines, but decided it's still early to tag out on bucks. Tuesday evening I glassed my fields in MD, and saw enough to keep me awake a little longer ever night between now and the opener, LOL. Found a monster on a piece of public land.
Total for two mornings was 4 bucks in range, 4 does sited.

&quot;In heaven, even the fish have antlers&quot;
