one of the things I enjoy the most is being quiet walking through the woods just to see what you can kick up and see. may not be the smartest thing in the world but like seeing the animals where they belong. i hope there are lions around, i hope they are returning no matter why.
...
I have to think that they are "in the area." without the simple awareness of the possiblity of them being here, i think it could lead to more possible unfortuante things like what happened to Lee Ann and would hate to see the animal destroyed just for that.

and I'm not saying board up your houses, carry your guns, and keep your kids locked up either. don't take me wrong on that.

Simply be aware.
Agreed on what you say, NY Outdoors. Still, I wonder how folks will feel about cougars returning when they are as common in every state as my research tells me they are becomming. Will people still regard sightings with awe? Will some regret the restrictions on their own freedom? Certainly we cannot imagine this, as we have deeply embeded, second generation fantasy impressions (Disney/Discovery/etc.) that currently replace our ancestors' survival instincts. I love to be quiet walking through the woods too, but where I live, a matter-of-fact person will look up and behind constantly and scan the surrounds. I have gotten used to being hyper-aware and actually enjoy my strolls, but in Colorado, we are allowed to carry. A human's natural defenses don't compare to those of many animals, so I choose to "equalize" myself somewhat just in case a cougar, bear, coyote pack or wolf pack doesn't have the shy instincts that many think they do, and they actually do need to eat what is available and easy. My unarmed walks used to feel peaceful and inspiring. Now my armed walks are pleasant still, but more challenging than relaxing.

Being a lover of more common crittere as well as of wildlife, I vote that you take the mutt to the pound if you try your 55 lb drum idea, and the pesky pooch is what you find. Regarding trapping cougars, I have heard only negative results for this effort. Surely will be interested if you do catch a BIG cat. Dunno what you should do to convince anyone that you did though, as we know bogus photos are pretty common and they will be suspect.

usa, My coauthor lives in Fallbrook. You're kinda near some of the more lethal-to-humans cougar action in Cali (Cuyamaca & Whiting Ranch) no? I agree cougars are in the boonies and in the towns in many areas of your state. Same thing here. I actually get more reports of cougars in our town than in our hills, but I assume this is because more people live in town to see and report them. Kinda surprised me when they first showed up out on the Colorado prairies. But, heck, they are now confirmed in adjoining Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Oh yes, and we are getting wolves that were introduced into Wyoming (Yellowstone) from the north and wolves that were introduced into New Mexico from the south. It is legal to protect livestock from them in northern CO but not southern CO. Huh?

Hi Ya, Cougardaville ~ Yuppers, some thinks dem to be fictional in NY. Not from multiple reports I have gotten. This pic doesn't confirm cougar, but I'd like any reasonable opinion as to what else makes the type of wound in this one of three pics you and others have sent of the horse kill. I recall NY authorities said coyotes were likely to blame, but note the lack of leg wounds necessary for coyotes to bring down a horse. Maybe it could have been a bobcat? If anyone is really interested in the technicalities of cougar wounds in horses, compare to this confirmed cougar wound in Washington state.

I think with the large influx of trail cameras in the last 2 years some pictures are sure to be taken of these cats.Just a few short years ago trail cams were still hundreds of dollars but now they are as cheap as $50 and countless folks make their own.

Seems like everyone I know that hunts has at least one so with all these eyes in the woods 24/7 we should see some pics of the large cats.I do find it very plausible that the western cougars could migrate east.

Yeah!! All good thinking......and your right about these cameras, they are worth the time & money, especially if you sighted a cat put that camera up and leave it be, chances are it will return, they are VERY territorial. If we all get ready with cameras, and do some tracking, this topic will become so much easier for the non-believers. We do need that so called "hard evidence, but remember they aren't called the Ghost cat for nothing!" Visit me at my web site www.Trackincats.com

I live in chenango county, I was out near pharsalia one evening and I saw what appeared to be a yellow lab dart in front of my truck. the tail was very long and the gait was odd. It stopped and looked up at me from a crouched stance, right then I realized it was not a yellow lab. I could not bring my self to believe what I thought I had seen and attemped to cobvince my self that I had just seen a bob cat, but I could not explain the 3 foot long tail nor the size of it ( about 100 pounds or more). The next day I checked with some of the people who lived around the area, hopeing that one of them had a large yellow lab and this would put my mind at ease. Well I found out that no one owned one or had seen one recently. One of the old coots said that he saw a couger, a while back. If anyone knows the area, I was out near Bowman lake state park. I know what i saw, and i dont know what else it could be. I dont know if it was a pet, or wild and i really dont care.

Gee all these people talking and you call it B***s***!! wake up, this is happenening all over the United States! And as far a ECN , the test for scat cost $200.00, so I don't know who you are talking to, also if they are studying the EAST what are they doing in Illinois?? Every body is screaming for hard evidence, well as soon as that does come, and it will, Lets all see what the jail & fines are??

Just for the record, I don't hunt anymore.

All fish catch and release. I have my reasons but that's my choice and opinion.

Tree hugger vegitarian pacifist .... definitely not, I'm impartial there, everything looks good in my crosshairs.

although I really really miss rotiseree marinated grouse. Wonder if there are any other grouse bow hunters out there. You guys want a challenge.....try that.

does the idea of big cats keep me closer to the truck.......I mean come on already, get real. Ya it does and I got all my windows boarded up like I live in florida preparing for a huricane. I also sit on my roof in fatiges and spotting scopes keeping an eye out for the ATF and FBI too. sorry couldn't resist

truck hugger ..... hehehe, why drive a truck when you can play in a jeep.

just trying to bring to light that the possibility does exist and tried to organize some links to valid acredited info for you people to look up and judge for yourselves.

I mean look at all the cougar threads just in the northeast section alone, there mostly full of opinions hearsay and hogwash. Heaven forbid if someone took it upon themselves to actually give a $**t and make some valid info available free for viewing.

And for those that may have seen or have evidence ........ you might want to contact anyone at the ECN in the above link.

If anyone comes up with samples(scat hair ), they can send it to the ECN as they have access to and capabilities to DNA test. You yourself will not have to pay anything but the shipping to get it there.

If you guys want to accuse me of giving a crap and trying to make people aware..........guilty as charged. That's all the initial post is about.

The info is there if you want to look it up.......... or not, your choice but the info should be read before judged and commented on. the ECN organization and website is probably the most credible as far as the information goes.

I really like the pending status of the michagin UP investigation. for them to state "pending" means there is some good hard evidence they are following up on.
