Ya I did come by some articles regarding that attack as well. was tracking that a bit through the local papers online a while back.

thought one of the neighbors had a run in with the cat a few weeks after as well.

recall that the police shot two of her dogs on the property upon arrival without even having them checked out to see if they did it. police showed up, seen the mauled body, shot the dogs. way to go johnny law

sounds like a lot of evidence that could have been collected wasn't, was overlooked, or has come up missing since.

all the way around ...... shamefull at best.

and agreed Bmullin. no offense taken from you at all.

the problem up here in new york is that we really don't have much to be fearfull of in our woods. bears are limited but are around and most of the time split if seen. we don't have much in the way of rattlers or poisonous creatures very limited in that regard. I would think it'd be more important to know up this way for that very reason.

doing things that could just possibly put one self in harms way not knowing or not thinking that it might be possible to have a big cats around.

one of the things I enjoy the most is being quiet walking through the woods just to see what you can kick up and see. may not be the smartest thing in the world but like seeing the animals where they belong.

i hope there are lions around, i hope they are returning no matter why.

was going to leave this out of it to keep any of the typical, "ya i saw bigfoot there too" comments out but.

our first sighting here was very cool. Appeared to be 2 full grown cats and what i'd have to call a very large male with a smaller female.......still full grown. i woke up, walked out on back porch, caught some movement from corner of my eye. turned to look to see them both sprint full spead across open grass field and covered about 200 yards in a flash straight off into the woods. the larger one was quite large with atleast a 3 foot tail. where they started from was only about 50 yards from the house. I'd have to guesstimate the big one at about 140 plus pounds.

never have i seen a new york wild animal cover so much ground in such a hurry before

between myself and my mother, we've been fortunate to have 5 "possible" sightings over past 5 years all occuring right off our property. i hadn't been to involved thinking it a fluke and not what i think i saw but we've had two possibles in past 3 weeks one of which was myself.

for that reason alone I'm taking up the responsiblity of trying to track these cats in my area to if nothing else prove they are NOT cougars and with 2 in past 3 weeks, I have to think that they are "in the area"

without the simple awareness of the possiblity of them being here, i think it could lead to more possible unfortuante things like what happened to Lee Ann and would hate to see the animal destroyed just for that.

And I'm not saying board up your houses, carry your guns, and keep your kids locked up either. don't take me wrong on that.

Simply be aware.

Does riding on the bus, then, REDUCE the likelihood of being attacked by a predator? Maybe being hit by lightning reduces such risks???

I hope you dont go outside very often KLue--less--you should stay in where you'll be safe and if you have to make a mad dash for the car or the mailbox I suggest banging two pots together

hillbillyhunter1: A is lighter weight and easier to carry than two pots, don't you think?

When children I know go outdoors, they have been prepared about what to do if lightning threatens.

When children I know go outdoors, they have been prepared about what to do if a cougar threatens.

You may think such preparation of children to be clueless.
I think the approach of denial to be mean.
Of course we should prepare children for anything we know about or highly suspect. This doesn't mean children or we have to quit living, but why would you deny a child or a loved one a chance? I have news accounts of children in our western area of the US who have been told what to do about cougars who have had encounters without injury using what responsible adults taught them.

Not sure if I can get into trouble for this or not but...........

I have access to the occassional metal 55 gallon drum from work. I'm gonna come up with some kind of live trap with one. probably the biggest thing I can come up with without full on custom fabing.

that's big enough for this cat we've seen recently but the bigger one's will fill that container and probably be quite pissed upon release.

probably going to be easier to live trap one than catch a photo of one. if nothing else, see what kinda varmits are around the house for sure.

one neighbor lets his mut of a dog run loose all the time, boy I'd hate that to end up in that. take him right to the pound and let the owner deal with it. heck that mut just might come up missing........ dang kitty must have gotten him

someone mentioned that they wouldn't let their children roam around in the mountain's of california because of the cat's, well I've got new's for him it's not just the mt's it's balconies in oceanside and most anywhere you roam in cal., they've been sighted in most cities munching on pet's , between the cat's coyotes and now bear's our deer herd has gone to hell. I'm all for letting nature take it's course but thing's are getting out of hand' I hunt constantly and many time's all I see is cat or coyote track's and no deer track's, I do my best to put a dent in the coyote population but cat's are protected so we have a saying around here, shoot, shovel and shut up !!
