I think the approach of denial to be mean.

Of course we should prepare children for anything we know about or highly suspect. This doesn't mean children or we have to quit living, but why would you deny a child or a loved one a chance? I have news accounts of children in our western area of the US who have been told what to do about cougars who have had encounters without injury using what
responsible adults taught them.
