Does anyone here hunt in the Catskills? If so where do you guys all hunt, and what do you think of it? I've always hunted Sullivan County where it wasn't too mountainous, but now my Dad and I bought a cabin in Delaware County on some rough land. I have a feeling that the hunting will be a lot harder here.

I've hunted the Roscoe area since 1986, my father since 1960....The deer are small averge rack was a 4pointer, with some bigger nicer racks. We had to camps, one was in Sullivan CO. just north of Cystal Lake, the other was in Delaware CO, about 5 mins from the 1st camp.

Well, I would like to try for a bear this year and would like to know where you guys think would be the area with the best odds for that. Also, have you guys hunted any of the watershed land yet?

I copied this from my reply on "Any NY hunter there?". I am a Catskill hunter and see this as a great upcoming season.
I hunt in Ostego County in the town of Morris (4N) and in Deleware County, town of Walton (4W). Trail cameras show a good amount of bucks...Some 8 pointers. I have seen more then two bucks togeather in a single photo. The ratio appears to be near 50/50 bucks to does on the cameras. However, in the field I see far more does to bucks. Twice this year, in the first weeks of this month, I did see a buck and doe bedded down togeather. One in Morris and the other in Walton. I kicked them both up.
Bears are more abundant this year. I have seen 2 road kills on route 17 heading west near exit 114, also several evening sightings ny neighbors.

That is great to hear about those buck numbers. I hunt in Margaretville and New Kingston and I haven't gotten too much scouting in this year. The DEC is claiming that they think the deer take will be down this year. I sure as hell hope they are wrong.

I have hunted the catskills for about 10 years. Mostly in sullivan county 3k. Before the 2002 winter There were so many deer that I use to jump them when I walked 50 yards into the woods. After the 02 winter I would have to say the herd was cut in at least half. If not by more. I am not saying that there are no deer around. The hunting will for sure be tougher. With less sightings as with last year. If the DEC was doing there job in 02-03 they would have forcasted It before the 03 hunting season. They gave out just as many doe permits as the 02 season witch hurt the herd even more. Someone in the DEC is not doing there job and just collecting data after the hunting season[:@] They are 2 years behind in forcasting witch tells me that most of there data is an account of what hunters did the previous year. Somone should tell them to get off there a$$ and get into the wood and see what's really happening.

I agree. The last two years I have seen a huge decline in the number of deer. Especially where I hunt in delaware county. Sullivan county, the other place i hunt, seems down too, but not as much. I am hoping that the awful weather during last years gun season saved a bunch of deer.
