RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Not a thing todate. I have seen one gut pile posted right by the parking lot by the bridge week before last. Tracks noted all over but no deer physicaly seen. The only ones I have seen are headed south on 28 in Montgomery County on the left side in a large field one large doe and a fawn.

RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Since I did not draw the Elk hunt in PA I am off from the 30th of Oct till the 13th of Nov had use or loose leave on the books. So I shall be with you all on the 5th. Going to walk the area and try to find the stand areas and mark them on my GPS and post them here.

RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
davidlj,
We would be glad to have you join us. You dont need to mark spots, I know that place like the back of my hand, I'm like a human GPS unit. I will get you in and out of the woods with no problem, just ask Slice...;):D;):D Beside the Lefty and Slice getting lost debacle on Sat, the deer action was pretty good at Monocacy. Much better than the week before, we saw a fair number of doe and a couple bucks in one evening. Things are looking good for the Nov hunt, the action should be real hot by then. |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Lefty, I forgot you guys even went hunting last Saturday. Where did you see the deer at? And how big were some of the buck that you saw? I went out to my land up here and didn't see a stinking thing. My brother went out as well and passed on a doe so I may take his stand tonight. I just want to get some meat in the freezer first.;)
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Me and slice were way in the back, were we hunted last Sat. I had a button buck come in to about 8 yards and stop broadside....Slice saw 2 doe and a spike. Mossy and a few of his buddies were on the front side, one guy saw a decent 6 point and they saw some doe as well.

RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Went out again last night and still didn't see a freakin' thing !!!! Hopefully I can get out tonight since it's really cold here today which should have the deer moving. I guess the best thing that happened yesterday was getting to watch the Ravens lose yet again.:D:D:D. Don't worry Mossy, there's always gonna be next year. Hopefully no one on the team will have to serve any time in 2005. He//, half the stadium will probably be filled with parole officers.:D:D:D

RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Lefty,
Well, are you going to post the pictures from last night?? |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Rick-
Lefty said he's taking off work today. Knowing Lefty, he's still burried underneith the blankets, snug in his bed right now. I wouldn't look for any pics until at least noon!!! Congrats, Lefty!! Slice |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
How have you guys been making out lately. Like I posted earlier I finally saw my first two deer of the season so hopefully the movement will pick up as soon as the temps start dropping.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Me and Rick C. hit monocacy last night. He hunted that funnel and I sat in that tree Bearklr picked out, about 6:45 I had 6 doe come by and I whacked the biggest one. I will post some pics later today.

I wouldn't look for any pics until at least noon!!! Congrats, Lefty!! Slice well, im here in lefties bed with his wife, nope no sign of him!! (I hope not anyway) he must be out cuttin that doe up :). Rick where did you hunt? he said that funnel, which one did he mean? any you guys interested in hunting Sat evening? I'll be there either way, just let me know and we can hook up. oh congrats on the doe lefty, I'm glad you found your bow, they come in handy!! oh and I forgot, did any of you hunt near where I picked out my tree, I left my bino's at the base of one of them, I'm hoping they will still be there on Sat when I go back, if not that was a costly mistake!! |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Mossy,
I hunted off the tractor trail near the old truck (same place I hunted that Saturday morning we all went out). Looks like a nice funnel, but no deer seen while I was there. Hope you find your bino's. I thought I was the only one who left stuff in the woods, but between you and Lefty I could probably outfit myself with a bunch of nice gear just by following you guys around ;) I won't be able to get out Saturday PM with you guys. Good luck, hope to see some pics posted soon! -Rick C. |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Well so far no deer taken. On route 27 this weekend while headed home from night shift on Sat there was a huge doe with a broken neck near the water tank. Then Sunday another doe just 30 yards up from the one hit on Sat was on the road even more busted up. As of today she was still there. The one from Sat was taken I gather since she was a fresh car kill. I will be out hunting tomorow afternoon after an 18 hour stretch at work I need to get some rest so no AM hunting.

RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I was just reading through your posts and wondering where you guys are hunting? Don't worry about me taking your spots, just curious. I live in Catonsville and do most of my hunting around the Sykesville to Lisbon area. Fredrick is a bit of a hike at 4:30 in the morning.
I have seen a couple of spikes and fours and a bunch of does. Tried sneaking up on a doe today. Got within 45 yards and then stepped on a twig. Thought I was going to die standing still for that long before she trotted off. [&:] Had to leave the woods early this morning to pick up my daughter from daycare who had a fever. Good thing I have every Friday off till the end of the year! :) Gotta bunch of vacation to burn up. I have been passing up shots on does waiting for this bruiser buck in the area but I'm going to a new spot tomorrow. Shooting the first doe I see over 80lbs. I havent shot any of the smaller bucks because of the DNR combining regions B,C and D into one this year. Got a real nice 8 pointer last year so I want to save my buck tags for an 8 or better or until the end of the season. One region kinda stinks for me because I hunted both Howard and Caroll counties. I could tag 4 bucks per season if I wanted to. Oh well. Good luck guys. |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
G2,
were hunting Monocacy public land, near Frederick in Buckeystown. I live in Carroll Co. and yes its quite a hike early in the morning (about an hour with no traffic). We are using this place as kind of a group area for huntingnet members, we have a date of Nov 5th where all of us (about 12) are getting together and hunting, if you would like to join us we'd love to have you. If you want to hook up with me and ride up I can meet you, I live in Taneytown. Let me know |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Thank you for the invite mossy. Monocacy is about an hour from me also. Since I have never been there to scout any areas, I will have to decline the offer. I don't want to be walking around there blind. Maybe I can catch you with you guys next year. :)
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Any of you guys interested in joining me for the first day of ML at Monocacy on Thursday?
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Sorry I haven't been here for a while guys but everything has been hectic here. I just got a promotion so I have absolutely no time to do anything and to make things more crazy my wife has decided she wants to move so we have been meeting with alot of people to list our house, get loans and look at new houses. I just wish I could sit in my treestand and not worry about a thing.:D As far as the Nov. 5th hunt is concerned I won't be able to make it because of this new position however I will be coming down on the 6th to hunt all day again if any of you guys are planning on hunting then. Mossy, I'll call you about the elk hunt next year to discuss some things with you as soon as I find time. Good luck to everyone.
P.S. Lefty, you think you have it rough when your wife wants a kid and goes out and buys cribs and car seats. He//, when my wife wants another kid she puts our house up for sale !!!:D:D |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Sorry to hear you cant make it bearklr.......is your dad still coming? We only have a couple more weeks until the hunt, is everyone else still planning on coming on the 5th? I know Mossy and Slice will be there, how about the rest of you guys that are coming from from the eastern part of the state?
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Lefty, I'm not sure if my Dad is still going to make it on the 5th or not I'll have to check, I know he is deffinately coming on the 6th though.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I was just down Md for the last 3 days hunting. Cost me over $100 in gas alone. To come out to Frederick would add much more to that as I will be down there that week and the week after also. Seeing how I have a new property to learn I think I will have to pass it up, man gas is killing me [:@].
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
wow lefty their dropping like flies, it may be just you and me on the 5th, I cant believe eric's gonna stand us up though!! I thought we were tight man!!! you gonna stand us up for your wife?? just kidding man, good luck with the house hunting, its a pain! lefty how was monocacy today, was there alot of people there? I hunted my farm in carroll co. saw a spike, a 4 pt, and a 7 pt very early, about 7:15 I was surprised to even see that as nasty as it was, I had my goretex suit on and my tree umbrella up (dont laugh I love that thing) didnt get wet at all, was worried a little about the rain getting on my 209 though, I guess it will be ok (hope so)
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Who all went out today? I was out all day in Howard County and only saw 6 small doe. Can't being myself to shoot something that is smaller than my dog. :)
Mossy, I luv my umbrella too. I think I have to give T/C Arms a call. I have the Encore 209x50 in stainless and synthetic. Around lunch time I took a good look at it and there were a bunch of surface rust spots on the barrel and ram rod guides. I tried to get rid of them tonight with some cleaning solvent and gun oil but they are still there. [:@] I bought it because it is supposed to be more weather resistant. GRRRRRR. How does Monocacy work with permits? Is it daily/annual? How many peeps are allowed in there at a time? |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I saw 2 other hunters on the back side of Monocacy yesterday. I had to cut out early, the little piece that holds my 209's broke in the morning when I got up in my stand and put my primer in.[:@][:@]. I kept droping primers out of the tree if I tilted my gun back at all. I decided to call it quits at 9am, I walked out of the woods and into the back corn field and there stands a nice 8pt in the bottom feeding. I crept up to about 150 yds, but twice the primer came out when I pulled the trigger, so it was his lucky day. I got my gun fixed and went back out in the evening and saw a small 6pt but thats it. Taking a half day from work today so maybe this evening I will have better luck.
As for the hunt on the 5th, it looks like its gonna be the Lefty and Mossy show. Oh well they will come next year when they see the biggn's we bag!!! |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I will be there the 5th.:D
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I finally got the monkey off my back, and shot a 90 lb doe this morning, all I have been seeing is small bucks, I've seen 7 different small bucks, I just hope other people around me let these little guys go this year, man will it be good next year. So far I have seen a spike, 2 four pts, a 5 pt, a 6 pt, and 2 sevens, all were year and a half olds. I know there are at least 2 monsters in there (at least mid 120's one may go 130) I cant wait til rut, they will be running everywhere.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I won't be able to make it, I have to leave for Texas tomorrow morning and will be gone until the 9th of November, last minute thing. Maybe we could have another hunt later in the season I will have two weeks off of work the day after Christmas. Best of luck to you all!!
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
So, who is it that is still in?? Me, Mossy and Lefty??
Slice |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Sorry about not making it on the 5th guys but I'll be there on the 6th if you guys are gonna be there then. I know my dad has every Friday off for the rest of the year so he may still make it on the 5th, I talked to him yesterday and he said he was going down this Friday if anyone will be there.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Looks like I am going to have to back out also. I just found out I will be heading down to the Eastern Shore Thursday night and won't be back until Saturday, if I am lucky.
[:'(] |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
ok, so now it looks like it really is down to the mossy, lefty, slicey, and davidlj show, wow I guess we dont have to worry about our intial thoughts of finding everybody a stand!! I guess we can just pair up, and hunt. I will probably still head down to my original stand at the stream crossing, depending on the level of rutting activity there, and at my farm, I may hunt only the morning. I was really hoping since we picked a date so far out, that everybody could have made it, but I understand things come up. Lefty, I am on vacation starting this sat for 5 weeks, so if you want to hit monacacy one day next week let me know, I was hoping to find a tree maybe 10 or so yards back from the one I originally picked, because visability was so crappy.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Guys, I live in Frederick and was wondering if you guys would mind me joining you on the 5th. This all depends on if I can get leave from work. Let me know. Thanks
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I hunted Monocacy Saturday morning 10-30. Saw a bunch of deer. Of course most of them were bucks since I brought my ML for the last day of antlerless ML season.
I almost got a shot at a big doe at 30yds, but a downed tree limb was blocking my shot. I probably should have taken the shot, about a 50-50 chance of hitting her, but I am trying to be as ethical as possible and make sure I get a clean shot and a quick kill. I was waiting for her to take another step for a clear shot, but something startled her and she (along with the 8 pt. she was with) took off. I hope next week brings out some more deer. Good luck on the 5th! -Rick C. |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
At least you are seeing deer Rick which is more than I can say. Where at were you hunting? Did you take one of the spots we picked out awhile back or just find a new one. My Dad was down all day on Friday and didn't see a single deer. He was back in pretty far though past the fields Lefty and I hunted in last time I was down.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
we went saturday evening, and out of the 3 of us we saw 1 deer, I was in my stand at the stream crossing, my buddy was in the tree erics dad picked out, right up the hill from me, and my other buddy was in erics tree, all we saw was one doe, and a couple of muzzleloader hunters, shooting alot, one nearly knocked me outta my tree, scared the crap outta me. I think, as hunting season goes on, so many guys are hunting on the fringes (where we hunt) that the deer are being pushed back. I did see about 15 scrapes, down where that big white oak had peoples names carved in it, but no deer.
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I found another spot, guess I just got lucky seeing all those deer. There were several ML hunters on the ground, I think they were pushing the deer up my way. This is the second year in a row I have had to pass on a nice buck because I brought my ML for antlerless and left my bow at home!
-Rick C. |
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
Thats why I hit that back side Mossy, the deer get a lot of pressure from the front main parking area and it pushes the deer back. I will probaly be out there Thurs, Fri and Sat so hopefully I will have some luck with one of those big boys. For everyone that is hunting on Friday, what time do you guys want to meet up?
|
RE: MD Hunt Final Preperation
I wanted to wait and see this morning what time it got light, before I suggested a time, it started to get light at around 5:30, we would probably want to be in stand sometime around 5-5:10? I would really like to hunt back in further that day, Im convinced that will be out best bet, so I will need to go with you, (Ive never been back there). You know how long of a walk it is, so what time would we have to meet so that we could get geared up and make it all the way back there to get set up by 5 or so? maybe we should make a new thread, kindof a last call to see whos coming? Ill pm one of the moderators to see if he can pin it up top.
