Though I definitely do not condone stealing or damaging another person's property I also have to say that I agree that leaving your stand out on public land for more than an "overnight" is not really that great either. Public land is just that...open to everyone, so it can put other hunters in a difficult situation. I think the phrase "First come...first serve" really does apply in this case....though if I found another hunter's stand in my area I would simply head to another location close by to hunt.

just a word of advise, don't get caught in a stand that has screw ins on state land. If its your stand or not you will get the ticket.

Be very careful with any hunting done on public land. I have had stands stolen, broken, tires slashed, car scratched with metal object, harassment by animal rights activist, etc. Best bet is to have an alternate site or two to go to in case it's 4:30 AM and you find your stand destroyed. I try not to leave mine in anymore, but with advanced age, the ol' back can't take dragging them in and out. A climbing stand is also a good alternative. Sometimes if I can only get one stand in on state land, I keep the climber in the truck just in case. The first bowkilled buck I ever had was the result of coming into my stand, finding the animal rights people had trashed it ( used bolt cutters to destroy it and left me a nice pamphlet) then went to stand "B" and 20 minutes later had a lifelong memory. If you leave a stand overnight on public land, don't ever assume it will be safe to climb the next morning. I actually don't mind other hunters. I use them to push deer to me. All it means is I'm in earlier and further back. To this day I'm picking up cigarette butts and paper left on the trails I walk every year. Public hunting is just that, it means contact with the general public and sometimes they're more frightening than anything you'll ever find in the woods.

With your permission I would like to use your quote in my signature on occasion. May I?

I am guilty of placing my portable tree stand out the night before opening day every year on public land. That is after months of scouting.I don't leave my stand hanging high up in the tree but rather at the base secured by 2 different lock and cable systems. When I do this I always make sure I'm in the stand by 4:30 am because your right public land is first come first serve. If someone should ever beat me to my intended hunting site I would leave the stand secured to the tree and set up on the other side of the hill on the ground.Thats just good manners.

Stealing is just stealing there are no excuses. Its not acceptable in the grocery store ,the hardware store,or the sporting goods store. If you leave your car parked in the public parking lot at the game lands its not acceptable for me to smash your window and help myself to your possibles just because your not in the area your car is.If it don't belong to you leave it alone PERIOD!!!! Let me say it again.STEALING IS JUST STEALING THERE ARE NO EXCUSES!!!!!!!

PABowhntr,

Certainly. Just try not to leak it to the general public.
