ticks are out
Went for a hike in Sterling Forest (Orange County) this past weekend. We stayed on the well used trails buthad to by pass some flooded area and ended up loaded with deer ticks. Not sure I want to turkey hunt this spring, I've alreadybeen treated forlymes a few years ago.
When I was a kid all we worried about was poison ivy and bees but these ticks are creepy. Be careful out there. |
RE: ticks are out
Warren,
If you treat your clothes with a spray containing Permethrin you will be tick free guaranteed. I have been using it for the last four seasons and I have not had a tick on me or in the house. Permethrin lasts for up to six weeks in your clothing and will even last through a couple of washings. Bob |
RE: ticks are out
They're out everywhere. Picked up a bite the weekend before last, clear out in Illinois. Havent seen one in AP yet but I'm sure they're out here too.
Trust me, Lyme is no fun! Be very careful out there guys. Gotta try that permethrin. Deet is certainly not 100% effective and it's just plain nasty stuff. |
RE: ticks are out
Found one completly gorged on the floor last week must have been on the dogs and laoded up. Creepy son of a B's
|
RE: ticks are out
Ticks aren't fun. Definitely spray yourself down with Permethrin like Bob said.

RE: ticks are out
NO.
we use AVON SKIN SO SOFT the most. on our dogs we use ADVANTIX 9. i see dogs in bad shape from ticks. my dog is on his way to vet monday for his LYMES SHOT. did you know most ticks come from your breath. they follow your breath to you from ABOVE. safest thing is, CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES WHEN YOU GET HOME. i had 2 on me today and dog is scratching. DONT LET YOUR DOG IN BED WITH YOU AND IF HE IS ON SOFA, PUT A BLANKET DOWN AND DONT SIT ON IT UNTIL YOU PUT A CLEAN ONE ON. i know, its a pain in butt. my wife just got done checking my back for ticks. for some reason they always bite me on back or back of my arms. |
RE: ticks are out
Skin so Soft iswhat the wife and I use to keep away the mosquitoes away when we sit out by the pond in the evening. But can't use it hunting, you smell like a perfume parlor. Got to find something oderless to keep away those ticks while hunting.[/align]

RE: ticks are out
oh hunting, no i was talking about OTHER than hunting.
i have no answer to that. my dog got bit last week. he blew out his back end bigtime last night.never saw that in my life,he had it all over my kitchen cabinets and walls. now he is limping along when he gets up. he is due for his annual lyme shot and test monday. i bet he got lymes from that bite last week.:( these ticks have got to be addressed by our state. i know HIKERS that said they are not coming back because of these ticks. you should see how some hikers are dressing, they look like they are in bee suits:) |
RE: ticks are out
I knew you mentto use skin so soft while in the woods, other than hunting. That was a good tip for those that didn't know.;)Hope your dog gets better. Can't believe how a little bug can be a big pain.[:@]

RE: ticks are out
Yes, but not until it dries. It is for use on clothes only, for skin you need something with deet in it, the higher percent the better. |
RE: ticks are out
what a start to year.
12 ticks on my dog from just being in woods for 1 hr. i tried a tick killer i got at WAL-MART. it is called ...HARTZ ADVANCED CARE 2/1 FLEA&TICK DOG SPRAY. it has nozzle for stream to put it down your dogs back and spray also. it killed all 12 ticks dead, they hung onto him but were dead as a doornail. so far, i like this better they the expensive advantix 9,i think i paid 9 dollars or less for 19.6 oz. it says apply 1 time a week,i bet you could go longer if you dont have dog in water. i like it so far and its cheap compared to advantix 9. i am reading bad things on BIO-SPOT so i would avoid that. it has that PREMITIN thing in it and dogs are getting sick from it. |
RE: ticks are out
Hey guys,,,hows this permethrin stuff for Kids,,,I know the Deet stuff is great for adults but i hear it can be harmful to children,,,does the permethrin have the same risks?

RE: ticks are out
Yeah, the ticks are out bigtime already. Used to be I only had to worry about them when up at camp in northern Clearfield Co., PA. In the past few years, however, they have been showing up with annoying regularity down here in Indiana Co. also. Never used to be bothered with them here at home. My yellow lab has had several on him this year. I've taken some live ones that were still scooting around on him off, and today found one embedded on his neck that I removed. Gotta check myself every day anymore. I DO like checking the wife for ticks, however....................

RE: ticks are out
i was sick last 2 days with flu like .
last week i was in woods for 2 hrs with my dog looking for sheds that i never find.:) my dog had 12 ticks on him when i got home. i had 1 on my arm, i got off.. today i was dizzy and went to doctor, guess what he pulled a tick out of my back, it looks like a 22 cal hole:( the hole looks big enough in my back to require stiches, can you believe that.:( he said he thinks i got LYME DISEASE. he put me on pills for 28 days, boy, i am dizzy. after coming home i took all my clothes off outside and changed my underwear. only thing i did not do is shower that day. vet checked my dog and gave him a LYMES SHOT .;) he said he had 26 dogs come in this year already with LYMES DISEASE.:( i think this is a national emergency, its that bad out there[:@] |
RE: ticks are out
To get lyme disease the tick has to be attached for a day or more. Less than 10% leads to lyme disease.

RE: ticks are out
i figure mine was on for at least 4 days or more.looks like i was shot in back with 22 cal:)
many people i know did not get pills and now have problems to lyme disease.:( my doctor said,SPROUL DO YOU REALLY WANT TO RISK GETTING LYME DISEASE BY NOT TAKING THE ANTI-BOTIC PILLS. PILLS COST ME 8 DOLLARS. i am not taking a chance. my friends dog got LYME DISEASE. HIS DOG NEVER GOES IN WOODS AND HE ONLY WALKS THE DOG AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. he did not get LYMES SHOT.:( |
RE: ticks are out
You don't have to go into the woods to get em. They do live primarily in leaf litter but you can pick em up in your yard or just about anywhere. They are here all year bbut they get active feed heavily this time of year. If I recall correctly, they only need blood a couple of times in their entire life cycle but right now is the prime time. Even peolpe who seldom go out arent all that safe. They come in on dogs, cats, mice etc andcan survive in your carpet for quiteawhile

RE: ticks are out
Someone needs to find a way to eradicate ticks and deer flies from the face of the earth.Nothing is worse and the ticks are bad this year.Permanone is by far the best defense against ticks.
Sproul,I'm glad to see that you aren't messing around.Lymes disease is scary stuff.I hope you're ok. |

ORIGINAL: DougE Someone needs to find a way to eradicate ticks and deer flies from the face of the earth. Our game commission does a great job of eradicating our deer herd. Maybe they could come of with something. |

Maybe bring Alt back to sell the plan.:D

RE: ticks are out
Evening before turkey last year, went to roost some gobblers. Decided to take a different route that I normally do, which had me walking through knee high to some places waist deep weeds for about 500 yards. Had a buddy with me, and we were walking real fast trying to cover most of the area quickly. Got to the end and we had ticks all over us! I had around 15 on my pant legs and shirt and he had 10, and found two more when we got home. Funny thing is, I usually walk all through those woods, most of which are fairly open, every year, and did throughout turkey season last year afterwards and never get any. Ive not been back to walk onthat &#*$%% powerline though.(LOL)
Those little blood suckers crawl partway up plant stems and sit their with their forelegs outstretched looking to hitch a ride with anything that brushes up against them. ..Sproul, that tick nibblin' on ya for 4 days?! That darn tickoutta look like a cantalope! Its also no wonder your dizzy, you dont have no blood left!;) |

Sproul,I'm glad to see that you aren't messing around.Lymes disease is scary stuff.I hope you're ok. i got real dizzy and flu like .could not keep my balance. they said that it takes from 3 days to 2 weeks for this to show up,so i was sick on monday at youngwomans creek stocking trout ,i figure i got bit on thursday, so that was 4 days to show up and got worst on the 6 th day today. they said the nymph ones which come out now are worst because they are so small you have hard time seeing them and feeling them.they are bad ones with red butt and 8 legs. i looked in mirror same day i came home and saw nothing on my back. today is when i FELT something wrong in shower and saw blood all over my fingers as i reached back to try to reach the spot below my shoulder blades. i have hole in my back the size of a pencil eraser,CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT.DID NOT FEEL ANYTHING UNTIL TODAY. the pills cost 9 dollars and are doxyocyline you take for 28 days. i took pill 3 hrs ago and feel better already even tho they said it takes a day or so for pill to work. my dizzness is almost gone. too bad they dont make something like a soap that you can put on in shower that will kill a tick. 3 years ago i was sitting in paddys run creek near renovo,pa. i was sitting on rock in creek. not a tick on that rock ,yet i got home and found 2 down my neck. doctor said they followed my breath to my neck from trees above. unreal. hope i am not boring anyone but this info may help someone. this has just added another disappointing thing to sport we all enjoy, getting out in woods scouting with kids or dogs.i love to do it but i am not taking any kids out to our boy scout camp as of now, no way. i never had 12 ticks on my dog in 1 hr or so walking pipelines, usually its about 2 or 3 total. |

SPROULMAN: I think I would start brushing /flossing my teeth better if I were you.
question though: In your second or third post, you state you had your dog out for one hour walk, got 12 ticks. Subsequent post it became a two hour walk?? For those that have used the product, can't remember the name, Pirmanone ? can it be used safely on animals? Thanks in advance. |
RE: ticks are out
crokit, permanone is a brand name. You can buy it at wall mart. It's a copper colored can with a blue lid.You spray it on your coths and it will last for over two weeks.I keep a can in my truck at all times and A pair of pants and shirt sprayed down at all times. If i know I'm going to the woods,I just put those cloths on.This works wonders. It's doesn't repel them however,it kills them after they're on you for a few minutes.
As far as dogs go,I buy a concentrated version of the active ingrediant permetherine at Tractor supply. It's about $5 for a small 8 ounce bottle that you mix with water. This stuff is designed for livestock but I imagine it would work on dogs.Probably best to ask you vet first or call the manufacturer.I use it on my horses and it does work.I may be wrong but I think the brand permanone has something in it that bonds to fabric so it may not be as effective if you spray it on animals.Again,I may be wrong about that. I seriouisly wouldn't consider going in the woods from now until the first frost without spraying down with permanone or another variation of permetherine. |
RE: ticks are out
Doug, glad to see you suggest to contact the manufacturer if a person has any questions on how the chemical should be applied. Alot of people have the attitude, what can it hurt? You should never guess with chemicals! Also, where do you purchase your permanone?
|
RE: ticks are out
DougE: Thanks. Good info.
|
RE: ticks are out
No problem fellas.Ticks are nothing to fool around with.
I usually get the permanone and Walmart. It's in a copper colored can with a blue lid in the camping section. The concentrated stuff I buy at Tractor supply but alot of local feed mills may carry it as well. There's several different versions of the concentrate.Just look for the active ingredient permetherine. |

ADVANTIX K-9/FRONTLINE PLUS are good for dogs.HARTZ 2/1 at wal-mark works good too but needs to be put on every week, others 1 time a month. i did not use any and did not have it on my dog,i thought as cold as it was out that ticks would not be bad. THAT WAS BIG MISTAKE AND ONE I WILL NOT MAKE AGAIN. taking this pills is not fun for 28 days, ugh.:( |
