Binghamton police responded around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday after receiving calls about a black bear laying in the right lane near the Clinton/Mygatt Street sign for exit 72. A tractor-trailer apparently hit the bear, according to police, but the vehicle left the scene before police arrived. Based on the skid marks, it appears the vehicle hit the bear about 125 feet from where the body came to rest.
Police questioned on the scene if the driver thought they hit a person and fled.
Local police departments have been receiving unconfirmed reports this past week about a bear spotted in Sunrise Terrace in the Town of Dickinson. Binghamton police said they assume this is the same bear.
The sow had an ear tag signaling that the 7-foot long bear was tagged in Pennsylvania
Mildred Wall, 67, lives on Prospect Street and was walking her Siberian Husky around 11:30 p.m. She was surprised to learn that she could have been greeted by a black bear in her residential neighborhood if the bear managed to cross the highway and climb the fence
