Hi guys,
I'm considering going on a do it yourself Maine bear hunt this fall. I really don't want to kill a bear over bait (just a personal preference). I thought I'd go spot and stalk some large clearcuts or hunt mast.Just wanted to getsome opinions from those that have done it before.I'd be interested to hear any tips on tactics and particularlywhen to go (early or late season).
Oh yeah -- I'll have a full week to hunt and will be hunting near Mt. Katahdin.
Thanks,
GH

well i prefer to hunt over baits myself. its funa dn you get some real cool trail camera photos of bears and stuff but if you want to do it w/ out baiting i would hunt the early season when the corn is still standing. w/ some good scouting you can probably take a big bruin although up around katahdin you arent going to find to many corn feilds so the option there would be to scout out some older cutoff for berries. i hunt the eustis area and over to solon mostly and have real good luck w/ bears hitting the baits though!

I would check out the old berry bushes as well as beechnut ridges, when checking these out look for old logs that have been ripped up. bears will roll old logs over and rip them up looking for ants to eat as well as beechnuts to fatten up on if no one is baiting nearby. Good luck.
