I just wanted to say once again that it is impossible for the DEC to know how many deer there are on every square mile of NYS.
Then they have no business allocating tags for harvest. Also, if they don't know they shouldn't be lying to people and saying that they do.

We as hunters of the land should know.
How is it possible for a few random hunters with little to no resources to know something that the DEC with all their money and all their "specialists" and all their resources can't even figure out??

The DEC doesn't step foot on most of the land.
Then they have no business telling anyone how to hunt it or what they can or can't take off that land.

If your deer herd is that bad, hunters from your area should let them know.
We do..........CONSTANTLY.

You know what we hear in response???.........Not only do they dismiss any notion of a diminished herd.......they come right back with "We have population problems all over the state and PLEASE kill more does"

It's like talking to the wall.

In the '70's we saw few deer, shot few deer, and it was the exception to the rule to receive a "party permit".
Back in the days of arm bands and 5 guys to a doe permit it was not uncommon at all to see groups of deer 20-30 strong. Seeing deer was not a problem at all.........the only struggle was timing it right so the guy wearing the arm band was the guy who saw them that day.

Now you are LUCKY if you see more then 2 deer together........and most times it is a mom and little one at that. The deer numbers are way down, plain and simple. Anyone who has been in the NY woods over the last 20+ years can tell you that.

I sure as heck dont need anyone to tell me the numbers are down, thats what we all have been saying repeatedly in this thread. I just disagree with your way of thinking on this and blaming the DEC, thats all. I enjoy reading others takes on this, and posting mine. I believe that most hunters I know, recognizing a decrease beyond what the DEC suggests, would simply kill less deer, thats all, rather than "fill their freezer".

Not all the blame falls onto the DEC's shoulders. We as hunters must protect our deer from bad hunters and poachers as well. Do I believe that the DEC has dropped the ball YES I DO. But we as hunters need to step-up and take control. If you are aloud only one buck during the regular season than that is all everyone should take. Same with bow and with doe permits. I have tried to practice some QDM on all the land that I hunt and it is hard knowing that these deer will probably be shot on neighbors property, but they are legal deer for them to shoot. How ever to here that one of the hunters took 2 bucks on opening day is just wrong. Now this upsets me, both deer were young (not that it matters). My point is that this kind of hunting (I mean poaching) must be stopped. I have talked in the past to the neighbors about some kind of AR for our area (just our own thing) the response was no andthat if DEC ever passes an AR rule that we will shoot first count points later. WOW does NY need to tighten their grip they need to better control the deer take and reporting system. Just my $0.02

RE: NYSDEC is a joke

Very good post. I have a poaching problem in my area to compound the problem. Unfortunately I don't know what they could do to make the reporting system better. It's pretty easy for some lowlife scumbag to shoot a deer, drag it out of the woods, and butcher it in his garage without the DEC knowing anything. In all my years of hunting I have NEVER seen a DEC officer driving around or checking hunters ANYPLACE. I was talking to a DEC officer the other day discussing my poaching problem and he says he has 300 square miles to cover in his territory!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the DEC takes into account a certain percentage for poaching when calculating deer herd #'s and number of tags to be given out.

with the reporting system I would like to see NY set up check-in stations around the state and all deer shot must be checked in to have a legal tag. I would like to here from some people in other states about the check-in stations and see if they have made a differance.

RE: NYSDEC is a joke

NYBowhunter, its my understanding that illegal deer take, roadkills, all other numbers are considered and figured when they equate the numbers. How that can be done accurately, statewide, is beyond me, and based on comments in these forums, not being done effectively for some areas.

Pjarrows, Im with you on that. I like what states like Ohio do, temporary tags upon killing, and a permanent tag when the deer is checked in, and they all must be checked in. So many states do the non-transferable plastic or metal seal, Im surprised (not really) that NY doesnt.

So you just want to let the DEC continue to destroy the deer herd and hope that the average Joe out there will have enough discipline to not pull the trigger??

Good Luck

I agree with atlas. Although it sounds real good in theory it simply isn't going to happen with most folks. As long as they have a tag to burn and a deer comes by them they sure the heck aint gonna let it walk to bring the deer herd back to life. Sad but true. You can't even blame them either. They paid the money for the tags the DEC is dishing out so they have every right to shoot what they want to. I would say a very low percentage of hunters are currently adopting the theory of letting them walk for the good of the herd. JMO I could be wrong.

Exactly........you can sit and dream up scenerios of glorious woods full of deer and hunters sitting in the trees just happy to watch them walk by and let them go about their business knowing full well that they are insuring the future health of the herd and enabling their fellow hunters and future generations to enjoy the woods and all it's splendor of creatures and bounty. Here is the truth.......BANG!! game over.

I would never blame anyone for filling a tag given to them by the DEC. Hunters all over the state depend on the DEC to manage our herd and not destroy it. If you don't want tags filled don't give them out. It is so simple it's rediculous. People can't fill tags they don't have. A guy pays $68 for a license and takes a week's vacation to go spend time at his $30,000 cabin that costs him another $5,000 to run every year just to hopefully enjoy some deer hunting a couple days out of the year and get a break from the real world and all his worries. You are gonna blame that guy for dropping a deer that crosses his path??

It's his fault???................Really???
