I am trying to decide what venison dish I want for dinner tonight. I have a nice batch of jerky drying right now but that is for snacking.

I went to college with a guy that cooked venison with bacon........I didn't really see the point because it killed the venison taste.......but anything that tastes like bacon is OK with me ;)

Guess this thread is beating a dead horse at this point. No matter what positive things people say. It just seems to get shot down regardless by those that have made up their minds that NY DEC has ruined hunting in the whole state because their areais not the hotspot it was.

My Dad hunted VT hard infrom the late 50's-the early 80's. From about1958-1968 he had great hunting. Took a buck every year, and saw 20-30 doe daily. These areas crashed due to deer overpopulation about 1969, and never really was the same again. He continued to hunt through the 70'suntil he gave up on these areas by '82.The habitat grew up and nowholds few deer PSM simply because the cover was not the same.My dad didn'tget upset with VT f & G and cry foul. He moved on.Most hunters I know have a hot spot for a few years. Word gets out, and the cover phases out as prime location. They move on to newlocations.I have seen it on fishing areas as well.

NY is a big state. You can't judge by the statusof the herd from your littlecorner. My state is much smaller, and the deer situation changesnot only from DMZ units, but from cover to cover.I am sure a much larger state like NY its just more so.

That is exactly why if only a few guys were saying it we wouldn't be so concerned. When nearly every guy you run into reports the same poor conditions (even on the internet) it becomes more worrisome.

I understand what you are saying, but I see alot of positive reports here. They are justgetting shot down. So not every guy is complaining. There will always be hunters wanting more deer regardless if its 5 DPSM or 50. This isdespite what more deer might do to the habitat or the deer themselves. Guys in VT are still hoping to bring back the "glory years", but the truth is, the habitat in 1960 is not the same in 2005. They did not manage the herd back then when it was overpopulated, and it crashed hard. There are lessons there. Plus the guys who complain are going to always be allot louder than those who are content. Not many guysonline ranting about too many deer.

Atlasman, I have read alot of your posts and comments over the past months and I know that when you have an opinion you stick with it know matter what, and there is nothing wrong with that. I just wanted to say once again that it is impossible for the DEC to know how many deer there are on every square mile of NYS. We as hunters of the land should know. The DEC doesn't step foot on most of the land. If your deer herd is that bad, hunters from your area should let them know.

RE: NYSDEC is a joke

jf5, you are right on the money on this. Ive been in the biz for over 25 years and Ive heard all this almost every year. Its simply fact that we experienced the glut for some years, and now its getting back to where it always shouldve been. In the '70's we saw few deer, shot few deer, and it was the exception to the rule to receive a "party permit". But, dont forget, there were also alot LESS meat processors and taxidermists then too. Then we bloated for twenty some years to everyone getting more than one deer, a meat cutter in every neighborhood, and three times as many taxidermists. Now that deer numbers are getting back to where they should be, its become like musical chairs, more people aregoing without.

In spite of that, theres still areas I cant drive the speed limit, theres so many deer crossing at dark. Hey Phade, you know where I live, how about Colby St. by Northhampton Park? Or the parkway in Greece? Or 386 in Scottsville around Foxies? Or anywhere near Victor/Perinton? Tons of deer, in hunted areas.

I would HATE to try to do the DEC's job of managing this herd statewide...
