Any one Bowhunted around Necedah, Meadow Valley, Joackson St. Forest or Buckhorn state park last year? How about Hayward area?
I missed last year but plan on a few weekend trips early to the Necedah area (4 hours from me) & then a 3-4 dayer closer to rut around Hayward.
I have been MANY- MANY times to your fine state so do know my way around-just wondering how things might be this year. good luck to all in 2004.

What's to talk about? Lots of rain, kind of between hunting seasons...kind of a quiet time of year.

I could again bring up how stupid Earn a Buck is, but what's the point? We would have the same exchange all over again. Me and others saying it is a dumb idea, and the "Amen DNR Chorus" saluting the job they do, in spite of what the harvest numbers say...

But, like I said, what's the point? Deer per square mile have actually DECLINED in most units over the past 6 years, but since the DNR has reduced the overwinter goals for deer population, they now say "Whoa! Too many deer! Overpopulation problems!" Forget about the fact that even the DNR can't show that their Sex-Age-Kill model is accurate (remember in early 2003 when they first said the population of deer was down according to EAB due to a lower buck kill in 2002?), forget about the fact that EAB will mean fewer hunters in the woods, and forget about the fact that the t-zone hunts in October do nothing more that alienate the fastest growing segment of deer hunters--bowhunters--forget all of that. The DNR is content to manipulate the numbers to justify the bloated bureaucracy created in the Wildlife Management section of the agency. The more complex the job is made to look, the more job security they have.

But like I said, what's the point?...so I won't even bring up the topic of the DNR's bureaucratic incompetency.... [:-]

Tjd has got it right from what I've seen so far. All 3 places I go to hunt are now earn a buck. Rock county, Richland county, and Sawyer county, and while I love venison tenderloin,,, the thought of having to follow some idiotic pencils pushers rules really T's me off! So if by some chance, that once in a lifetime buck, wanders past me, I HAVE to pass it up, if I haven't "EARNED" it. What a crock! If 33 plus years of deer hunting, and hundreds of miles of walking aren't "EARNING" I don't know what is! [:@]

TJD, sounds alot like the workings of our DNR over here. They always publish in early fall how there is an overpopulation and it's going to be a great year for hunting. Problem is when you get out in the woods there isn't any more game than there was in previous years...just more hunters. They always seem to be finding new ways to keep their jobs. I hunt turkeys around Sparta and always enjoy the locals and the country.
