Hi, first let me say I am new to the forum,or at least the bow hunting portion. My son (11) is an outdoor nut LOL he loves all things about the outdoors,camping,hunting,fishing,ect..... While we are realativly new to the Sw MO. area, I am seeking advice on several things, first: areas around Nesho area that are good hunting and fishing,
secondly: this year we are starting archery ( he really enjoys archery at after school program and he is far better at hitting the target than his old man is LOL)so we got him a bow. I have been reading about arrows and the tips seem to give their wieght in grains like that of a bullet????, what is the determining factor on what grainbroadhead to use for said application???? his bow is a 65lb pull compound bow. As I am a total novice when it comes to bow hunting I need as much help as I can get on this subject.

Welcome to Missouri, Allan. I have some relatives that live in Neosho, but I can't tell you anything about the hunting in that area.

I'm relatively new to bowhunting as well, so while I am not the best source of information, there are many on here that can answer your questions. It is really great that your son is interested in bowhunting. If you post your technical questions in the Bowhunting section, they will be answered pretty quickly and pretty accurately.

One piece of advice, I tried to learn to bowhunt after rifle hunting for many years and I tried to learn by trial and error. I think it would have been much easier to head into the archery pro shop and let them set-up my bow, arrows, etc. Trial and error can be fun, but muchmore simple to get straight answers from guys that know what they are talking about!

You've got the poundage covered and I'd suggest a 100 grain broadhead. I'd also suggest looking at the expandable type mechanical broadheads as well. They fly just like your feild tips. You could drop as low as 85 grain on the broadhead, but your kenetic energy will drop off as the weight of the arrow decreases. A 100-125 grain head supplies plenty of KE and should work well on whitetails.

If you shoot a 100 grain broad heads then you will also need to buy/shoot field tips with the same weight in order to hit the area on the target exactly the same.It is like sighting in a rifle with 150 grain bullets...you don't want to switch to 130 grain because it will be off and you will have to re-adjust your sight or scope.


I shoot mechanical broad heads but I will went the the Hellrazor fixed broad heads because I plan on shooting from a Blind and through the mesh camo windows.
