I'll be back to Richland County the last weekend of this month, but they will likely be gone by then. At least the fishing in the farm ponds will be good by then.

I used to live in Mesick, MI - claims to be "The Mushroom Capital". Lots of morels around there - the locals all have their favorite "secret" spots.
Every year - 2nd weekend in May is the Mushroom Festival. They have a Mushroom Parade, a Mushroom Queen, and lots of food & festivities, including a huge Flea Market.
Many of the locals even eat the "false morels", locally known as "caps" because the top comes off the stem. The stem and top of a true morel is all one piece (look closely at the picture posted above).
Most people get a little sick (or very sick) from eating the caps, but many who do consider it "worth it" (go figure). I never tried them.

IM jaybe :)

Andrew,

Where are you at in Ohio? I'm just north of Dayton. I figured we would need at least another week or warm weather, but if you are finding them anywhere around here, maybe it is time to start hitting the woods.

what temps are considered good for morels to start growing, its been in the mid 60's here and the nights have been in the mid 40's. I'm in NY so things should start warming up even more in the next couple of weeks. Are these conditions good so far.

I have been out twice now and only found a few. It seems like it is too dry here and they haven't been popping up to good yet.

We need a good rain then things should start happening a little better.

I found 16 small greys and 4 elephant ears this morning in nothern indiana. It's just starting here, this is the earliest i have ever found them around here. We have had 2 weeks in a row now of 70-80 degree temps and warm nights, last night we got a bunch of rain and this morning they were there. Very small though. Looks like more rain tomorrow, then 60-70 degree temps all week. I really think there could be a bumper crop this year. The last few years have been terrible, it's been a real quick 3-4 day season and it's over. I think were looking at a good 2-3 weeks worth if things keep like they are weather wise.

I went morel hunting on Saturday morning in Illinois. I saw a dozen squirrels, 10 deer, 2 turkeys, and a coyote, but not a single damn mushroom.

Lanse looks like you need to come back to Ohio because me and my brother found around 65 a piece yesterday afternoon. Found mostly blacks and maybe 15 or so greys so get back over here and pick you some.

Andrew,

I got back to Ohio yesterday evening. I figured that with all the rain over the last week, the conditions would be great here. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon to try to find some.

Andrew what is the difference between the greys and blacks. Do they taste the same and which is more common in your area. Wild mushrooms kind of scare me because I don't know enough about them. The morel seems pretty easy to identify and thanks guys for the tip about the caps....CI

I found 243 yesterday. It was a mix of grays and yellows. Most were very dry. I found all but 12 of them in one area. I picked shrooms for 45 minutes straight. It was the best day of shroom hunting I've ever had!

RE: Mushrooms?

Champlain Islander They are different because of color and shape the greys are greyish and rounded on the top. The blacks are black and the tops are pointed. Hey Titleist great find.

Next question is what type of terrain do they preferr? I have oak, beechand hickory hardwoods, swamp, pine or sprucestands and the soil is mixed between sandy in the pine areas and clay in some others. If I find some and they look like thepictures and the stem and cap are one could I assume they are really the prize I am looking for. I don't know anyone who picks around here. I live in Vermont.

If you don't find any you could always just grow your own , you can get a kit for morels for $35 including shipping from:morel kit
At least you'd know for sure what you were picking . There is a look alike for morels called the "false morel" that can be toxic , but once you know what a real one looks like they're easy to tell apart . A morel habitat kit eliminates that risk .

Thanks Kevin but I have enough stuff in my garden to take care of. I just figured it would be fun to try and find some...kind of like hunting. I spend a lot of time in the woods during Turkey season and I pick fiddleheads and leaks when I am getting ready to call it quits for the day. Iwould like to expand to morels if I can find some.

I just spent an hour and a half crawling around in the brush on the Great Miami river bluffs. I found 7 of the little light brown morels, and they are almost dried up. Well, at least i didn't get skunked. I really miss hunting the Mississippi River bluff outside of the Quad-Cities in northern Illinois. I used to find so many that I ended up giving half of them away.

CI i have found almost all of mine around ash elm and poplar trees. But last year i was weedeating in my grandpas yard under some whit pines and hit something weird sounding and i looked down and there were 8 grey morels that stood about 8 or 9 inches in height and about 6 inches around.

I went out the other day and found a little over a pound and went out tonight for a few hours and found about 5 pounds. They were all really fresh.

Can't wait to fry me up a mess of them.

Thanks D-Bass and A14 for all your info. We have lots of ash and popler here on the island so I will start to look when the time is right. I can't wait for my first find and neither can my taste buds.:D

It rained all night but it stayed cold. I had night crawlers out on the driveway for the first time last night so warmer weather is coming. The earlywild flowers have started to show out in the woods so the shrooms should be soon. The spring comes late here on the island because of the influence of the cold lake water. The plus is that the warm lake in the fall keeps my growing season going long after the rest of the state. I figure I will probably find some in a week or so. Good going on your find!

Well CI good luck on your first trip hope you get your first find. After all that rain we got i went to my spot that no one knows about and found 64 under 3 trees and guess what they were dying elm trees that have some of the bark falling off. Again Good Luck
