My wife comes home yesterday and says to me, a guy at work said don't be suprised if you find a big ten pointer in your marsh.
I thought what the heck? What are you talking about?
She says that a guy she works with was hunting up the road from our place on Sunday (its now Tuesday) and shot this ten pointer in the butt and blood trailed it up to our neighbors lot line.
When he went to the house no one was home and he said that it looked like there was no body home at ours as well.
From there he just walks away and for gets about it. (unbelievable)
My question is could this animal live through the winter?
Or is he going to die a slow death?
I just can't believe this!

There's no way of answering your questions. But it sure wouldn't hurt to go take a look around. Who knows, you just might find a blood trail or a 10 pointer. Yote probobly found him if he died, but they don't eat the rack.

But if you don't look - you can't find.

I would look to because if he hit them in the butt then hes probably dead somewhere even though its a bad shot iv seen alot of deer shot in the butt and died. Called "The Texas Heartshot" lol i would never take it though.

It a good possibility he might survive. You should would know him if you see him next spring, he will have a limp leg. Deer are smart, if they have the time they will try to plug the hole. My grandfather has shot deer and seen them run to a pond and roll in the mud to plug the hole. I have also heard this from other hunters so he may survive. Good luck when you go to look for him and let us know if you find him alive or dead.

It sure wouldn't hurt to go look for the deer. I saw Eddie Salter hit one in the ham on a Realtree video and they found it many yards and hours later. As for the guy who shot it he should have tried calling you or the neighbor to see if it was OK to look for the deer. Don't just quit looking and walk away. If you wound one you need to make every effort to find that deer.

Get the 'eff off your computer and help find that deer!


I hit a nice buck right thru the heart this past October with my bow. Tracked it for ½ mile at least. Sometimes they fall with a piss poor shot..sometimes they run a mile with a moneyshot.

Ya, Ya, I know I have to get out there and look.
Can't till the weekend and we just got eight inches of snow.
Its going to be tuff but I plan on getting out sometime this weekend.
I'll keep you all posted on what or if anything I can find.
It just @#$!! me off that a guy would wound a deer and give up so easily!

On the other end of the spectrum....

Last week, I stopped in at "The Angler" to get a Vexilar. 2 guys had a decent 1½ year old buck in their truck. I talked to them a bit...said they shot it in the front leg...right above the first joint. They blood trailed it hundreds ofyards...saw it bedded down..and shot it right in the throat.

How you shoot a deer that low on the front leg is beyond me...then have the nerve to track it. lol

I would listen real good at night thought. you could still find him.

Don't want to stir up a hornets nest, but if there was some sort of right of game retrieval in effect, this MIGHT have been avoided. But then again, it sounds like the guy was very negligent aboutmaking an honest effortto contact the property owners about going after the deer. What a mess....
