It a good possibility he might survive. You should would know him if you see him next spring, he will have a limp leg. Deer are smart, if they have the time they will try to plug the hole. My grandfather has shot deer and seen them run to a pond and roll in the mud to plug the hole. I have also heard this from other hunters so he may survive.
