that truly is the question my friend.
I've been thinking about using some calls during the Michigan gun season but I not sure which type to use. Can anyone give me some suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

In the past 15 + years I've tried most all the calls that have come out and have only gotten results from one.. I don't even remember the name but it's made in Muskegon.. You can pick it up at Meiyers for around $10.. I'll get the name for you.. I don't call much. Only if I hear them first or need to try and bring them in closer once I've spotted them. I've had luck from the start of bow till early Dec. We'll see what happens tommorrow.. Wish the temp wasn't gonna be 80. Gotta get out in the woods though..

my grunt call is just the average grunt call that you can get at any wal-mart, etc. i use it a little differently than elkhntr does - i will use it if i havent been seeing anything or am getting bored. the last 2 bucks that i shot with my bow came in within 5 minutes of doing a grunting sequence. i have tried grunting at deer in my sight and it never seems to effect them...

when i called it a "grunting sequence" i just meant that i do it more than once. i have no specific pattern that i use. is there one that i should be using? i maybe just do it half a dozen times over the course of a minute or so.
the first buck that i ever shot bowhunting, i had heard him grunting over and over again over like a 5 minute span before i could see him. so i use that as my justification to grunt 6-8 times in a minute and see what happens. i just try to imitate what i heard. like i said, it has worked for me twice over the past 5 or 6 years - it doesnt work every time. maybe once a season if you are lucky...

I'm not sure if there's one widely used sequence, but maybe just some type of technique. Obviously, you don't want to go out to your stand and start wailing away Isn't there some kind of method that works better than others?
What brand call do you guys use? Does it really matter? I got a free one from Buckmasters, but I'm willing to buy something better if necessary.
Thanks,
Mike

Hey I'll invite anybody up for the Michigan deer season. The bow hunters are out there right now as a matter of fact. I, on the other hand, have to wait another month and a half before I get my crack at em. All this waiting crap is driving me crazy!!
Thanks,
Mike

ness5575 and I have had some luck with it so it seems to work. I got to the point of calling only deer I see or hear because I can then judge how they react.. And the reaction is always different..
You ask about a specific sequence. It seems to vary. Early season I call totally different then during the rut. Early I use the grunt more as a "hello" and watch the way they act.. If they respond by ignoring or turn away from me I get pushy with them and try to stir 'em up a bit.. If they act curious and come toward me I give them one or two in there face then turn the call away from them and give them the sense that I moving or trying to keep some distance from them..
During the rut and post, I adjust the call from "young buck" to "doe" and try to make it sound as if I have a smaller buck chasing a hot doe...
I stay away from calling to the does. I've done the fawn bleets and doe calls to have them do nothing but turn and run.. I prefer to let them hang out or pass through and act as my "decoys"..
I'll get on here tommorrow and let you know the name of that call..
