Problem with my VARIX II 3x9x40
Just got back from a succesful hunt for moose. My problem is I was shooting into a rising sun and the glare (flare?) was so bad that I had to put down my rifle repeatedly to reaquire the moose as he closed in. Eventually got the moose in a more shaded area so made a good shot but now I am wondering if the superior coatings of a VXIII or Zeiss conquest would have made this situation easier. I was lucky as this moose was coming out into a clear cut but had he been sticking to the timber he came out of I would not have got a shot. Is it time to upgrade or am I asking too much from any scope?

RE: Problem with my VARIX II 3x9x40
My uncle had the same problem one year when he went deer hunting. He had a shot at a nice buck but when he lifted his rifle to shoot , he had such a glare from the sun that he couldn’t shoot. He had a low quality scope that wasn’t worth very much. After that instance I decided to get a better quality optics for my rifles and ended up with VXII Leupolds scopes.
Now after reading about your moose hunt with the glare problem, I’m also wondering if my scopes are adequate for situations with the sun. I’m going to have to test my scopes for my self and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully some will reply on higher end scopes.

You guy's need to get sun shades for your scopes. I have one on my simons and unless the sun is on the horizon that you are shooting towards you will not have any glare and it is much cheeper than a new scope.

would a sun shade or a couple of sun shades fix the problem? they just fit on to the end of the berrel to keep dirrect sunlight from comming into the scope lens. this gun hasa couple of shades.

Im not expert, i dont even have a sun shade for my VX II but i dont think it would affect the fov, becasue it is so close to the scope, just what i think, i wouldnt know, but it would have to affect your lowlight shooting, becasue your scope could hardly take in as much light.

RE: Problem with my VARIX II 3x9x40
This year in june I bought for $600 a brand new Leupold VX-III 4.5x15x50mm with the 30mm tube and B&C reticle. And I own a Leupold varix-II, 4x12x40mm bought new in 1991. Also I have owned and sold a Leupold varix-III 4.5x14x50mm bought new in 1994, and a late 1970 modle Leupold 6x40mm. There is a big difference in coatings and clarity between all of them. In choosing my scope this year I had a friend/manager at sportmans warehouse let me compare a Leupold VX-III 3.5x10x50mm $500. Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5x10x 50mm $400. Swarovski 4-12x50mm $850. Nikon Monarch Gold 2.5x10x50mm with a 30mm tube $550. We took them out of the store with a hour and a half of light left and were looking at the hillsides to the east of Idaho Falls until it was dark. To be honest my friend (Adam) and I couldn't tell a difference between the four scopes. All were excellent in light gathering and clairty. Before our test Adam was hopeing to sell me on the Nikon, but he told me the Swarovski would be the best at our test. Well we were both surprised at how well all of them did. I of course bought a leupold, diferent modle than we tested. but I think if you choose a top of a line scope from a quality scope manufacture you can't go wrong. I also put a sun shade on my new scope. And no the FOV does not change with or without the sunshade. I have a picture of my gun and scope in the big game form post "another successful year" with my elk and deer Hope this helps good luck to all.
