Help me choose a folding knife
 

Hello everyone, nice to you meet you all on this forum!

Long story short, I want to purchase my first folding knife and I need some experts help.

I’m thinking of either this or this, hard to pick one though, since both of them seem to be good and useful. I’m planning to use the knife for general outdoor activities and maybe some small game hunting and skinning, nothing too elaborate, but I do want a good investment, money is not a problem.

Do you own these knives? Are they good? What do you guys think? Thanks and looking forward for your replies.

I don't do expensive folding knives because it just doesn't makes sense for me.

I use opinel folding knives and when I ruin one I buy another.

The 110 is under $50,can't go wrong!

I think if I had to pick a folding knife in that size I'd go with the gerber gator 154cm drop point.

The 110 is definitely a quality knife but I don't like clip points.

Even with money not being a factor I just can't recommend a $100+ folder.

I can barley bring myself to recommend any folder that size as I would prefer a small fixed like the becker easkabar, becker necker, esee izula, condor kickback.

I carry a condor kickback or opinel folder myself because the condor is about $25 and the Opinel about $8 because you just don't do the things I do with my every day carry knife with even a $50 knife.

lol Ive obviously veered way off from what you originally wanted but thats my opinion and everybody should have an $8 opinel even if they want a $100 folder too.

I carry two knives in my hunting pack. A Buck 278 B for all around use and it has cleaned many deer. For the past few years, I have been using a Havalon Piranha Edge for field dressing duties. The Edge uses the heavier 60A blades and makes short work of cleaning duties. Break a blade or use it until it becomes dull; just pop in a new one. Extra blades store in the case that comes with the knife.

Have had a Buck 110 for about 40 years now.

For everyday carry as a pocket knife, the Gerber LST. Small, flat and light weight, comes razor sharp and is easily sharpened. For hunting the Case Sharks tooth folding knife. Razor sharp, hold an edge and easy to put a new edge on. I have gutted many deer with both.

I use my folder daily and for numerous things not just hunting.

Had Buck 110 for years, hard steel holds a good edge, the point is a little wrong for gutting, you have to be really careful. I've snapped the tip off of numerous 110's. The hinge wears and the blade loosens up.

Puma holds an edge well, blade is a little too hard (brittle) for my taste. Same problem as the Buck, the tip tends to dig in when you slit the hide to get at the guts.

Changed to Gerber (gator) which in my opinion is a better knife, the blade is thinker and takes abuse better. Drop point works better for gutting. The material they make the grip with can be attacked and softened with exposure to the wrong chemicals, Some Gerbers are a little thick. I prefer a partial serrated blade, not easy but you can split the pelvis on a deer with the serrations.

Best all around knife I've ever had Junglee Foreign Legion. I've had two now, lost one. Drop point, has a thicker blade much like the standard Gerber (Gator). Blade is a good compromise between hardness, holding an edge and soft enough not to break or chip easily. I dress mine weekly with a steel, sharpen it every couple of months and use it daily for everything from opening packaging to dressing game.

The down side is finding one, they discontinued it for awhile. Then somebody was producing a clone (they called it the Smith and Wesson SWAT) that was inferior, bad hinge bushings. If I could find one of the originals (with the pocket clip) I'd pay double the purchase price for another, just in case. Don't let the shiny handle put you off, it makes finding the knife a lot easier when you lay it down in the grass, especially in the dark.
