7mm mag of multiple varieties. It will put down caribou, moose, and deer sized game. I've taken but one hog and it drops them as well. It will also allow shots at distances better than my abilities. My 11 year old grandson used a 7mm 08 to take his hog, didn't take a step.

Im like a few others here and will lean to the 308 for you. Wide variety of bullet weights and construction to choose from for you application at hand. Plus, you are able to go anywhere and find ammo if for some reason you become separated from your ammo, you can find replacement rather easily. That and price.

I agree any decent deer caliber rifle will be fine
a .308 opens the door to cheaper ammo to practice with, and if your into the AR platform, you can get one there
if you like to shoot FAR, then you can up your caliber to bigger things
but most all hunting shots at these types of critters can be had pretty close if you do your part right!

A 100g slick trick on the business end of a GoldTip 5575 shaft will zip a hole in a hog in a sec...Oh wait, you asked about rifle calibers...
There are many centerfire cartridges to choose from. Do you have a rifle or access (borrow) to one already? If the numbers are .27 or larger you're good to go.
If you're going to buy a new rifle, ask yourself how often will you use it? What do you plan to hunt? It's hard to go wrong with a 30-06 or .308. If you're not going to hunt a lot then maybe consider a .300wsm. It'll be more than enough for a sheep or hog, and if you ever want to go for something larger (elk) or farther (mulie or goat) then the flexibility would be nice to have.
