A 22 Mag. case is a lot bigger around and longer than the lr case, so the lr case "will" go in the mag. chamber and "will" fire the lr case. BUT, it will split the lr case, and isn't a good thing to be doing!! Don't do this as it really isn't safe!!
Yes, you can shoot a 22 short in a lr chamber, but you will have to clean out the chamber if you fire very many shorts in it so the lr's will again chamber easily. The short will gum up the chamber ahead of the short case but it doesn't really hurt anything.

Alright old timer, no need to get butt chaped. Notice I said my OPINION?
And thats your opinion. So please keep those comments to yourself, if you feel the need to give me a lecture because I dont want to hear it.

The 22 Mag is more rifle that the 17 HMR. Heavier bullet more killing power as well. I some places the 22 Mag is legal for deer. Its not a deer rifle but I have seen it used as one. A varmit hunting friend of mine has trouble killing yotes with a 17 HMR.

Yeah, I do own both and Ive never had under 1" groups with my 22mag like a do with my 17hmr. And as far as varmint hunting I bet Ive hunted just as much as you, if not more. I have never had to pump more than one round into a fox or a bobcat with my 17 and have never had as much pelt damage as a 22mag leaves. So basically when it comes down to it the 17 has more velocity and better trajectory than the 22mag, not to mention the wind drift is less in a 17hmr than a 22mag. Ok so maybe the bullet is a little hevier, BIG DEAL! Anyways I wouldnt choose either of them over my 223 or 204. So there you go. Good enough for you Mossy?

Now you see aborquez, that was a decent post! you explained yourself, didnt go off telling people to keep opinions to themselves, etc. I may not agree with you, but at least I know what you have based your opinion on. Now for my opinion which you may not agree with ....but thats ok!!

I have to agree with Mossy...I have a .22 mag and my buddy has the .17. The price of shells are identical here. As for groups, they are pretty similar but on windy days mine is a little better. His shoots at longer ranges with less drop, but less hitting power. Most gophers will attest
I would recommend the .22 mag for critters and for plinking, but a .22 lr will definately be WAY cheaper. But my love for gopher shooting is about more than just the money. I just bought 2 bricks of Fed. .22 Mag TNT's for $210. Most people can't believe I would "waste" money on shooting varmints. But the stress relief is cheaper than an hour with a shrink
No more fighting...were all friends here! JDinAB
