I have two M38 Swedes. One I left in full military configuration, the other I dropped into a sporter stock with no other modifications. I too love this round and wanted a scoped rifle in this caliber. I discussed drilling and tapping with my gunsmith, and after comparing costs, the probability of being satisfied and the thought of forever altering a collector's item I decided to buy a CZ 550 in 6.5x55 instead. I don't regret my decision one bit. I still have two delightful military shooters and a VERY accurate scoped hunting rifle.
I'd give serious thought to a CZ 550, a Ruger M77 MkII, or a Model 70 Featherweight. I doubt you'd regret spending the money once you got to the range.
