cleaning rod question????
I have heard that 3 piece cleaning rods are bad for rifles, so I have been looking for a new one.
I really don't understand why the 3 piece rod is bad. It is made of aluminum, which is softer than rifle barrel steel. The brass brush is probably just as hard as the aluminum rod, or harder.
The new one piece rod that I was looking at is steel, again, harder than the 3 piece aluminum rod!
So, my question is this: is the 3 piece aluminum rod a bad thing, if so, why? Or is this just a myth? Thanks for the help!

The sectional aluminum rods flex and rub the rifling as they move up and down the barrel.Hard grit is easily embedded in the aluminum which then rubs the rifling which can cause damage.

Stubblejumper is right. Sectional cleaning rods are to be avoided, and the worst ones are those made of soft material like aluminum or brass. The best rods are one-piece steel rods, the closer to bore diameter the better. Also, rod guides really help reduce chamber throat damage.

If I was you, I would go one step further and get a dewey coated rod and stoney point bore guide. Throw those three peice ones away. Might use them for shotguns. In fact, I have thrown away all my brushes too after what I saw they can do to a bore.

They are right about the three piece aluminum rods. Throw them away.
Get a one piece steel rod or even better a coated rod like bigcountry is talking about. I have several of the Dewey rods and highly recommend them.

A hunting buddy had one bust off when pushing through his bore brush, so I totally agree...get a 1-piece. A rifle is worth a lot more than a rod, worth it!
