Well the 300 WSM is a good cartrige, never heard of the gun.
The 300 WSM is a good cartige about the same as the 300 Win mag with 180 gr or less bullets.
The recoil is not as stiff as the 300 Win. IMHO.It is sutible for all NA game, they say they are not ment to hunt the Big bears due to some feeding problems due to the rebated rim.I have never had a failure,I've tried to jam it,but it's pretty hard to jam a bolt.
As for guns any of the one out today will server you just fine.

In your case I would get the 280 hands down. It has more than enough power for what you want with reasonable recoil. I might further suggest a 25-06. Mild recoils and good killing power out to 300-400 yards.
Yes the 300 WSM is a very good round. It is however much more gun than you need for deer.

If you are a young man, and plan on hunting another 30-50 years, why not get a 30-06. It will allow you take anything on our continent (some will argue about certain bears), ammo is available everywhere and in many different types, and you can find any action (auto, bolt, etc.) you might desire. Lots of calibers will suffice if all you are going after are deer; 243, 270, 7mm08 to name just a few. The 280 is a great caliber, but ammo can be scarce in places and manufacturers seem to be chambering their guns less and less for that round. Buy Hey, you can always come up with a valid reason to get another gun.
