Scope power
I currently have a 1.5-3.5 on my H&R Ultra , at the range when shooting out to a 100yds it seems that I need more power. I need a new scope and would most likely put the one on my H&R on my ML. What power do you guys use for shots 100yds & out ? Even with my contacts in seems the 3.5 isnt enough at 100.

RE: Scope power
3x9 is the most popular and readily available form a host of manufacturer's. On all my biggame rifles (CF and MLs) I have 3x9 or 3x10's..more than enough mag and ability to adjust to the needs. 3 is as low as I have ever seen a need for and the ability to power up to 9 or 10 is great for longer distance shots or the range! When I hunt it most often stays in the middle 6 power or so, but like the ability to adjust if the situation arises!

RE: Scope power
I have a Simmons 3-9 Pro 50 on a Moosberg 500. Very nice in low light at low power with the 50 objective. Gives you roughly 10 minutes + - shooting time am/pm. Doesn't sound like much but can make the differance in a shot or none. Had it 4 yrs, taken 8-10 deer with it - No Problems!
On my new 870 slug gun I just bought a Bushnell Banner 3-9 with extended eye relief. Thats nice on a shot gun with recoil always trying to bust open your head (been their done that). Have shot about 40 test rounds thru scope and taken 1 deer - No Problems! I installed Redfield solid steel rings on this gun. A good mount for shot gunning.
9x is more than adequate for 100-125yrd shot.
The Leup Vari III is one sweet scope, but pricey. I have a Vari II on a Knight Disc. Very bright with clear optics.

RE: Scope power
If I'm shooting for really tight groups I might dial my scope up to about an 8x at 100 yards. This is mostly for shooting paper. When hunting 4x should be plenty at 100 yards.
I think it is tough to get away from the lower powers. Those 1.5x are really nice. However I want something that will dial at least to 8 or 9x. I like the 2-8x scopes.

RE: Scope power
For up to 100 yds I would use 1.5x5 power scope. I perfer a lower power scope because I lost an elk because it popped out of the brush at 20 yds and my 3X9 scope was on 6 power and all I saw was brown. I have a 1.5X5 scope on my deer rifle and have had no problem with taking deer out to 175 yds with the scope on 1.5 power.

I like the sraight 6X about the best. I have 6X Simmons Pro-Hunter. Hell of a scope. Gathers light better than my 3x9 Leupold. The 2x7 is my favorite variable hunting scope.
