Default Cleaning Remington 7400

The Manual states to clean barrel from the muzzel to the chamber. That just sounds wrong. Is it that hard to take the Model 7400 apart? Are there reasons not to break the rifle down for a good cleaning? This is my first Auto-Loading Rifle so I am open to any feedback. Thanks, Keith

If you want to clean the barrel from the breach end you will have to remove the barrel which requires a special wrench. Just get a brass muzzle guide that slips on your cleaning rod and clean it from the muzzle end carefully.

Try the Otis pull through cleaning system. This will allow you to the rifle properly from breech to muzzle.

Thanks for the input. Where is the best place to get the Otis pull through system. I live in St. Pauls, NC so if there is anywhere around town let me know. KW

Jim's Gun Jobbery in Fayetteville. Bryant's in Lumberton. Both shops have them, but Jim's has a bigger selection.

Cleaning it should not be a problem..if you can have someone make up a bore guide so much the better though. I would use a plastic coated rod and be careful with it as well. Have you tried Wipeout yet? That could be useful in cleaning out this gun as well. You would shoot the foam in from the muzzle end and it should probably end up in the chamber as well whicch is a good thing since you want that clean in an auto. Its advantage would be the number of times you have to run the rod down the bore to clean it. I would say two wet patches of whatever bore solvent, dry it out with 2 patches and then run the wipeout thru it. If it still needs cleaning then use a bronze brush with your favorite solvent for about 10X or so and then dry it out.

You will probably do more damage trying to take your rifle apart (frequently) than you risk by carefully cleaning from the muzzle. Conical bore guides are for sale very cheaply at gun stores, or online, and will prevent you from nicking the crown. I use one of these to clean my Remington 742 and it works fine.
