RE: 375 Holland & Holland

I have a 375 H&H Sako with a 1.5 x 5 Leupold. I purchased the rifle for a bear hunt in 1987 to Bela Cola, British Columbia. I love to shoot this rifle and do so each year. This scope takes the punishment the 375 can deliver with more than enough eye relief. When hunting dangerous game and you are using a scope, you must have one that will give you a wide field of vision. When turned down to 1.5, I can see part of the barrel in the scope. And the 5 power is more than enough for longer shots. This is a very good combination and has never moved, loosened up or changed impact in all the years of use.
Good Hunting....:D

biscuit,

If I had neither a 375HH or a 416, then I would go for the 375HH, as one signature line I saw said....

One planet,
One rifle,
Holland's 375!

It is a grand old round, one that is very much alive and well today!
==========

FYI, the Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby....
I've heard multiple complaints, more so than with standard bolt rifles, about recoil being difficult to manage with the Ruger #1's --- haven't had one, third hand info, but seems to be a reoccuring theme --- I don't know if it is lack of weight, stock design, location of chamber along the length of the stock or what --- your call, but be aware.

ELKampMaster, I have the same worries about the Ruger #1 in the heavy loads. The barrel feels right, but the stock feels both wrong and insufficient. I would set about replacing it right away.

Funny about the Ruger #1's, though. I have never, ever seen a used one. So I figger people just take the beatin'.

Biscuit, I had the same problem when I was looking to purchase the 375. The rifles just didn't feel right. I really didn't want to invest the money in a Sako, but it felt good and I definately wanted a bolt action. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to shoot the Remington African Plains rifle in 375 H&H. This rifle really felt good. My suggestion is to check out different manufacturers rifles to see how they fit and feel. Of course they must look good also. I saw your post with the Ruger number 1. It's a fine rifle, but if you decide to use it for dangerous game, you may want to consider a bolt action. Take it from one that's had the experience. When you know that you have another 270 grain pointed soft point and a 300 grain solid as back up, the decision to go to the bolt action was a no brainer. Don't get me wrong, the number 1 is very accuate, dependable and looks good, but most who invest in the 375 want to use it for the bigger animals.
Good Hunting.....;)

RE: 375 Holland & Holland

Sniper151, the Remington 375 treats me well; I have fired one, too, and it impressed me as very manageable. I was revisiting the Ruger tropical #1's this afternoon. The locals have a 416 rigby, 458 lott and 405 winchester in stock. The 405 win & 375 h&h are 8 1/4 pound or so rifles. For the 375, that is too light for what is left of my right shoulder. Soooo, it is back to the drawing board. I do have a 45 70 marlin guide gun for when I am out wandering by myself in the deep woods with a map & compass. (For me, that is fun. We all have our thing.) But it is ported and I hear hunters get PO'd because the muzzle blast scatters the herd. Oh well. No rush. But I am glad to see the 375 well received. As a kid growing up in scenic Iowa City, Iowa, the serious rifles going up North out of our one good gun shop were 375's. Left an impression. I like the 405 but the 375 is pretty flat to 200. Gotta think about this.

My Rigby is chambered in a #1 and I do not have a problem with it as far as recoil is concerned. It even wears the original hard rubber butt pad from the factory. About the only loads I use are the 400gr Dead Tough from A-Square, the Federal 400gr Woodleigh and my handloads with a 400 gr Hornady RN at 2600fps. If I want speedy 300 grainish loads, the 378 Wby gets the not. Recoil is about the same though;)

If I could handle recoil better I might be able to get better groups:D

Good work, DoubleA! I think you would make most anything big and temperamental nervous.

Gentlemen, I am stepping a bit out of my league in offering suggestions on rifles chambered in this power class, but you may wish to check out the CZ550 rifles in these calibers. They can be had new for shades of $700, and having just purchased a CZ550 in the very mild 6.5x55 Swede chambering, I can vouch for their quality and accuracy. Our local gun stores have these in .375 H&H, .416 Rigby and .458 Win Mag. I am tempted to buy one but I have absolutely no idea what I would need one for other than as a novelty, since my prospects for hunting big bears in Alaska or large grumpy critters in Africa are about equal to winning the lottery.

One of our local gun stores has quite a few used Ruger No 1 rifles for sale, mostly in small calibers such as .223 and .243. They've been sitting there a long time and seem rather expensive for a used rifle. They look like a very nice rifle, but I would agree that the stock feels somewhat strange to me; I definitely prefer bolt actions.

I had a Ruger NO 1 In 416 Rem Mag. The recoil was not that bad with Factory level loads. I shot a 416 Rem Mag in a light weight Dakota Rifle with a compacts Luepold scope. I chronographed twenty loads for a friend. The recoil was stout on that but it went a pound and a half at least less than the Ruger.
