American bison: tasty, enormous, thick skinned with a quick temper. What would be your rifle of choice?

(If we had buffalo and grizzly in the lower 48 like the old days, I wonder what America's line up of cartridges would look like today?)

I would think that the old "Tried and True" rounds would still be as good or better.something like .45-70,.45-90,.45-120..50 -120.That .50-120 would probally put the hammer to them.Maybe even get a period replica Sharp's or whitworth.Yeah............Then I can get.................Buckskins..................... ......moc.................................

45-70 Marlin Lever Gun would be a good choice. I would not hesitate to use my Remington pump 30-06. Also the 358 Browning Lever. BAR 7mm Mag or 300 Mag.

I'm going to suggest a Marlin 1895 Guide gun in .45-70, it can be had new for $450 or so, $500 for the stainless model, holds 5 in the tube, only weighs 7#, 37" long, really easy handling. I love mine.

It's very light, and very hard hitting on the other end, and if you need to put rounds out in a hurry, it's a levergun, so you've got the opportunity. In the Marlin, you're also capable of loading rounds up into the .458Win mag energies, certainly more than a buffalo is going to require (under NORMAL circumstances).

The Marlin 1895 Cowboy is a neater rifle, and a bit more accurate, but it's a lot less handy, I like mine more than my Guide gun, but it's certainly got it's place. Long walks on rough or dense terrain with a rifle this big isn't always easy. It's my choice for buffalo, but I typically get the pleasure of hunting them from horseback, so an extra pound on the rifle isn't a problem.
