.30-06 is a proven winner for so many years, you can find the ammo anywhere, many choices of grains, and bullets and you wont brake your wallet.
.300wsm, is becoming a winner it shoots flat, will take down anything the 06 would, ammo can be somewhat expensive.
recoil not much difference
As far as what to pick, you need to ask yourself what type of game will you hunting, the averge shot in yards would be?
If you will be doin mostly whitetail deer, and bear under 300yds. then stay with the 06

What are you hunting? If you don't leave New England you won't be doing much BIG game hunting, maybe 90% deer with an occassional moose hunt if you're lucky enough to be drawn. I'd go with the 30/06 or even a .308, just for ease of getting ammo.
BUT if you hunt areas where really long shots are expected, then maybe a magnum makes sense. A 30/06 is fine out to 250 and a bit beyond, on deer.
