Default Contender Handguns, anyone?

Does anyone on this board shoot one? How's the accuracy? I'm thinking about one, maybe in .30-30, or 7-30 waters. It would simply be a target gun, with the odd hunting trip in mind. In Canada, it's illegal to hunt with a handgun, (bloody Liberals) but that doesn't mean I can't travel elsewhere to hunt. What calibres are the prefered choice for target and hunting duty? Is somthing in the .308, or .270 class too much recoil on the hand? Thanks alot.

hey pharaoh2, i had a contender in 30-30 and killed five deer with it, i wanted to upgrade and sold my dad the contender and got me an encore in 7mm-08, love both guns, the contender had a 14" barrel and i've got the 15" on the encore with a fixed 4x leopold, it is fun and its reasonably accurate, the recoil, i have a brake on the 7mm-08, its really not that bad the gun does jump, but its not a hand gernade, the hardest thing for me was getting used to the scope...

the advantages i have heard for the 7x30 is that case removal is easier. but i've never really had any trouble with that on the 30-30 or the 7-08, plus its only supposed to take one shot.....

best of luck

Thanks, M.T. The 7mm-08 is another good choice, but I don't like brakes, and I'm not sure I'd like that much powder sitting back on my wrist. Did the 30-30 boot pretty good? Does anyone else have any experiance with these guns? Thanks everybody.

Love those Contenders.
At the moment I have a 30-30 in carbine length.
14" bbls in 17HMR, 25-35, 38-55
12" bbl 17K Hornet
10" bbl. 44 mag
And a 17" 22 Hornet is in the makings right now.

Over the years I have had and shot a bunch of diffrent calibers from 17 to 445 super mag.

The 445 was the most brutal I have shot
The 223 and 7-30 waters were the most accuate next to the 17HMR
The 38-55 is the most fun.
The 30 herrett was the most frustrating

Recoil on all the bbls I've had were/are managable. The 445 was OK but not a caliber I would pick for sitting down to punch paper[:@]

Just be very careful as the Contenders are very addictive!!

Yes I have a few barrels and two frames.
22 hornet 10"
22 hornet 10" octagon
223 rem,14"
6.5 tcu,10"
7mm supermag,10"
7-30 waters,13"
30 herrett 10"
30-30 win ,10"
30-30 win 14"
357 mag 10"
357-44 BD,10"
357 max 10"
357 herrett,10"
35 rem,14"
375 win,14"
44 mag,14"
45 win mag,14"
45-70,14"
If you are going to start using contender for hunting deer and smaller game the 7-30 waters is hard to beat.I have shot mule deer and whitetail with no problems. Its easy to reload very accurate light recoil and you can buy factory ammo if needed.I think it is a little better than 30-30 win,my opinion only.

both guns were very nice, i don't care for the break either and the gun really does not have to have it to be a shooter, i loaded my own for the 30-30 and developed some very nice rounds, i'll try to dig that info up, it was before puters for me, but i do have the loading data somewhere. these other guys with all their cals. look like they could help you more than me, but both the 30-30 and the 7-08 are very easy to handle and alot of fun....

best of luck

I own a Contender Super 14 also. This seems to be the most popular. I have the 7-30 and a 22 LR for plinking. Killed 2 deer with the 7-30. I handload and use 120 gr Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullets.
If I do my part, the contender will shoot sub MOA groups. If you don't handload and are thinking about using it for hunting deer/black bear, I would recommend the 7-30 or the 35 Rem. Both are ballistically better than the 30-30.
ps: I had an Encore carbine in 7-08 that wouldn't shoot better than 2 MOA no matter what I put in it.

Thanks for the advice all. I'm thinking this could be a fun one. Bronco22000, 2 MOA is still good enough for me. I usually am happy with Minute-Of-Whitetail myself, but to most folks, hole in hole groups are the only way.
